Disclaimer: I’ve never coached on the college level——The Big man should never handle the ball outside on a last second play to win the game. He needs a screen or double screens to move to his spot inside coming towards the ball. He should spot up inside and have the ball passed to him inside with a man cutting to receive the ball if he is double teamed. If he can’t get pass-he screens for whoever gets the ball and rolls to the basket for offensive rebound position. The ball needs to be shot with 8 seconds on the clock for the offensive rebound and second shot. Really there should be 2 or three options for a good shot with that much time left. Most defenses can’t guard 3 options, but the big man needs to be the first option to draw defenders. But to have him dribble to get a shot off is not a good play at this moment in the game! You need sideline plays and base lines plays already practiced for these type of situations.
Felder may not get many points but he was one of the few guys getting loose balls. I wouldn't mind seeing an occasional lineup of Lofton, Reeves, Fudge, Felder and Castleton
I remember a game this year where either Richard or Bonhem hit a bunch of consecutive...sometimes they fall and many times they don't But for us to take them to the wire and not get blown out on the road to a ranked team, to me showed improvement..clean up a few things and we may improve that quality win counter some one posted
Reeves was pushed and hacked the next to last possession for Auburn, they gave Auburn the ball. Good grief even Kowacie was unbelieving the call. Homer. We played pretty dam good and I am proud of the showing. The last play, Colin with the ball, not a good thing, I know the coaches thought score, get fouled or give to someone else, he takes too much time with his moves. Oh well, we played better with better movement without the ball.
Bro. We are 7-6. It is largely because we cannot hit 3 point shots. Look at the stats. We are supposed to be a hyper analytic team. That was what was heralded as our advantage, and yet 13 games into the season, we are still taking 19 shots that we know- being a team that only hits perhaps 15% of its threes in games against really competitive teams- we should not be taking. We are 11-75 in games against Xavier, West Virginia, UConn, Oklahoma, and Auburn. All of which we lost. That is not streaky. That is just horrible shooters- or the wrong ones shooting. Reeves, Richard, and Fudge (and perhaps Bonham)should be the only THE ONLY players on the team allowed to take threes. It does not matter what we do against Stetson and FAMU.
Biggest disappointment on the team is Lofton IMHO Feel like we need to play Aberdeen some and see what he can do. Would love lineup of PG - Bonham/Lofton/Aberdeen SG - Richard/Kugel/Reeves/Jones/Lane SF - Reeves/Fudge/Kugel PF - Fudge/Felder/Castleton C - Castleton/Jitobah/Felder Let the 3 point guards battle it out and start the best one at that position. Other than that, play the first person listed at each position as the starter. Can go big with Reeves at SG, Fudge at SF, Felder at PF, & Castleton at C Could move Castleton to PF and Jitobah at C if need more inside power for short spurts. Could go small, by switching down. Use Lane as defensive stopper and/or press for stretches with Lane/Bonham/Lofton/Kugel/Castleton Tonight was a nice step forward in my mind but the biggest problem with this team is playing Bonham/Lofton/& Jones too much. Where was Kugel tonight????
Nice game, we definitely did all we could in that one on the road to be in position, but damn at 7-6 we need some W’s. Needed to close that out. As for the last play, I don’t love Castleton getting it at the top of the circle in general, so to see it botched at the end game was extra frustrating. You’ve got to at least get a shot up. I mean geez…
I just hope TG goes back in the lab and figures out a better line up. I lost faith in Jones last year and Lofton is about there as well. If I’m going to not get immediate and potentially projectable production from older players….then turn the page and play younger guys. I’m done with the experimental phase with the transfers. Time to take our lumps with the young guns.
I like Bonham’s speed and intensity, but overall our backcourt lacks that scoring pop. It was actually picked up today because Jones hit double digits and Reeves had a monster game. So you really can’t pin this one on the backcourt, even if we don’t have the shooters. Our front court was manhandled tonight. Auburn really bottled up Castleton, and while Fudge chipped in as a slasher he had a hard time d’ing up and rebounding. Overall we were -12 in rebounds including -12 in offensive rebounds. Hard to win if you are giving up 12 extra possessions.
I’m not pushing a negative narrative here, but will keep saying, that’s the kind of thing coaches defending you…want you to do. That’s why it’s there and easy to get into that set. It’s a low percentage option. Letting us shoot a three….any three, by anyone….let alone….Jones, is also a low percentage option, and pretty much what any opposing coach wants.
It’s weird because Castleton does sometimes have success driving against man, but he also tends to try to force things and turn over the ball badly (as he did there). You are correct, the reality is a team like Auburn is probably cool with that look. Golden loves analytics but not sure he’s factoring in matchups (or that Castleton was struggling much of that game!). If Castelton had 25 and had been able to take his man during the game that would make sense, but Auburn was really shutting him down for the most part. Maybe the “play” wasn’t for Castleton to drive, it just seemed forced.
Well I recorded second half and of course somehow missed the final 2 min of frustration. Didn't expect to win at Aub but game was there for the taking. Hope to see more of Reeves playing like he did tonight. Same for Jones and Fudge.
I do think we are improving but a win tonight might have catapulted us into believing we can win on the road and a close game. My takes: Bonham is out of control too much. He needs to play to his limits and strengths. We had too many turnovers and missed balls we should have taken from AU. We played hard but not hard enough. Every single game in the SEC is going to be a war. AU had too many offensive rebounds - we need to get tougher on the boards. Every conference team will kill is if we don’t. Teams will try to take CC out of the game because we have no alternate option at this point. CC is a good passer but we need to be moving at all times off the ball. I like Jones but his lack of offense is a liability. I believe we will get better and win some games coming up.
Once again we have a game day coach who works these horrible SEC refs. Hallelujah! Well-played game all-around with great effort. Had no problem with the last play call- just didn't work out. Certainly better than silent CMW who was consistently outcoached and stood on the sideline taking all those crappy calls.
The officiating was criminal. SEC officiating is the worst and I never thought it would get worse, but it has. We got hosed
I'm surprised (not really) that the CC push off wasn't whistled. Sure allowed a bunch of time to run off the clock.
