Of course librarians can be fallible. The question is, are librarians more likely to be fallible or are those that are currently trying to impact the situation?

A better way to frame the question is what changed so much in the last two years? They are volleys been controversies, but there’s a far greater emphasis now on omitting books. In my view, those are almost all coming from the right, and all coming from a place of intense hatred, including being led by our current governor.

There’s no way that you put the decision in the hands of a human or a human body and make it infallible. Your objection is one that can’t be answered. You’re asking me to come up with an individual in the system that is beyond reproach. Obviously that’s an impossible task. And you would normally say leaving it up to the school board, so at least there’s some form of democratic accountability and process. But that’s breaking down right now. So they will be flaws if you leave it at the library and level but far less than putting it at the school board level under the current political atmosphere.

You can’t analyze the situation and divorce it from the current context. You have to look at what’s happening right now.

Is the last paragraph in your post the story of Lot and his daughters that is found in Genesis?

The protocols of the Elders of Zion - another example

Blacks Inferior? Oh just about every book written between 1776 and 1941.

The King James Version of the Bible - Very much "Thumbs Down" on sex between male and female. Don't believe it? See EXACTLY what Jesus says about "marriage" between man and woman. The first thing out of his mouth was that he and God were not so much for "it" but grudgingly concede "oh well if you must, OK" - all of which is "odd" to me, because these are "Gods" speaking and why they would consider conceding anything to low life human scum really confuses my brain.

Now before the religous have a "hissy" fit:
    Direct quote - KJV

"Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me":

It is good for a man not to touch a woman.
Neverthless to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.
Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband.

I don't know about banned, but I would prefer children's adaptations for elementary school libraries.

No, I'm not criticizing you for saying "no, it shouldn't," I'm applauding you for your consistency.

I am looking at it right now. My biggest point is there is a huge divide among opinions of what is proper and not.

I’m not taking sides either as I don’t know what’s in each book and at what grade level kids should be allowed to have access to it all, or at the least most of it.

That’s why I said let the local libraries carry all books and then parents can have some control over access.

I'm late to this conversation and this woman in the OP sounds like a quack, but are you suggesting there be no limits on what are just sitting there for our children to stumble upon?

If not, what is the line and who draws the line?

No on all accounts except for the fact that they were cultural norms.

Just because something is a cultural norm doesn't mean it should always be followed. I just find traditional view of marriage to be a much more reasonable cultural norm.

I find it to be much more cohesive logic to say "there's a reason this was the norm for almost every civilization for thousands of years," than to say, "slavery and segregation were cultural norms, therefore all of the cultural norms 2022 liberals don't like are bad."

As far as the point regarding individual rights, who has a right to representation in an elementary school library? If you want to say heterosexual couples can be in but not LGBTQ couples, fine, remove overt mention relationship dynamics regarding all couples in children's libraries. No right was breached, because there is no discrimination.

Yep liberals have the luxury of kids being raised in their values even if they leave them to the void that is the public school system.

Yes, everyone should police their own kids, but it's time conservatives took some institutional power back over education and level the playing field a bit.

Ron DeSantis and Moms for Liberty are good faith actors up to the task, not at all trying to traffic hate stochastically

I love how they tell us to police our own kids yet act like that does not include being involved in what is taught in our own taxpayer funded school.

I'm not making judgements on where the line is, just saying some folks need to stop acting like there should not be a line.

No, that’s not what I’m suggesting

There are PROFESSIONAL folks (media specialists and curriculum specialists) that make these decisions at the district level for age appropriate placements. In my district there is a committee that looks at these choices and parents DO HAVE input.

We are having a problem now because we have two Moms for Liberty nut bags on our board and one of them wants an “opt in” policy for libraries. Parents have always had the option of opting out, as is their right.

Well Ron DeSantis and Moms for Liberty most certainly shouldn't be drawing the line, so it does in fact answer your question in part.

Some of these posts just boggle my mind. What the heck is wrong with you people? We have gotten by forever with kids taking books out of school libraries. It has had a tremendously positive impact on the development of school children. There was no public library in the town I grew up in, and I would have hardly read any books if my parents had to drive me to a town that had a public library. No one talked about banning any books because the school librarians were trained and responsible people. Now, we have extremists creating issues that don’t exist. Why in the world are teachers going to want to teach in Florida or, maybe eventually, in any public school in this country? It is truly amazing to me what is happening here.

I doubt anybody would argue that pornographic material ought to be in school libraries. On the other hand, we ironically have a fan of the Confederacy citing the WOKE Act in an effort to shield White kids from being made uncomfortable - and it seems that she actually has some support. Probably from folks that have been complaining for years that little snowflakes need to toughen up and stop being so sensitive.

It's legit hilarious that these folks think forcing football players to pray with the coach or banning books about penguins is going to convince kids to become religious conservatives.

    They really don't get it.

The one who is trained & credentialed to be a professional school librarian; the one who should be trusted to leave partisan politics aside from their profession working with children (like teachers).
