1-2 major portal players needed at WR for sure. Ricky needs some help.

I think getting the right people from the portal is super important for next season. You can't win with all freshmen. So far the three he got are not game changers especially the new QB. I have a friend who is a big Wisconsin fan, they are happy to ee him go.

Agree that things have become more complicated especially with NIL. Billy can make up ground quicker by using the portal. For some reason FSU is doing well there, so we know it’s not all money related ( at least in the portal).

Being a good recruiter means that you could hold on your players.

All I know is I’ve seen DL and LB out there in the portal and we are sitting on our rear watching FSU picking them up

Yep, we "might" have one too many O-line coaches in the room. This is the one room we did not need to flip. I'm starting to wonder what is going on behind closed doors.

I also wonder if their daddy will be coaching there too... He just "retied" from coaching high school.

Here's the thing, the best possible NIL guys for next year might just be playing on another team... in a bowl game. ;)

I can wait it out at least until the end of summer. If we don't have major help from the portal by then... it's going to be an interesting year.

It’s clear BN is building his foundation with HS players. I don’t see a lot of the consistent playoff contenders heavy in the portal. Now I recognize that could change after the bowls/playoffs but all those schools have built a solid foundation from HS recruits and continue to do so. I’d rather have that than building off the portal every year because I don’t think it’s sustainable.

It is funny to see people bring Norvel up as an example in the portal. I’d imagine he wouldn’t have made it past year two at UF. People already claiming BN ain’t it.

That was Early Signing Day . . . when most of the blue chip players sign their LOIs.

There is another on February 1, 2023: National Signing Day.

However, there are two separate Transfer Portal periods.

#1 begins the day after the CFP teams are announced and is open for 45-days.

    #2 is a 15-day period (after Spring Practices) beginning May 1, 2023.

If I'm wrong about any of this, someone please correct me.

Okay. Are you satisfied with 12th? As I recall, Mullen was able to pull in classes of that quality without much effort (of course) and was a better play caller, categorically. Are you saying we traded away a better gameday coach for roughly the same underwhelming recruiting? I sure hope not.

Can't help but wonder if the latest round of transfers is related to nothing but NIL bidding-wars and external program tampering. We're starting to see guys in good standing that have earned starting roles move on for no other apparent reason. This may be too fast of a turnover rate. NIL is the cancer.

We missed on some of our top targets but 12 of our 20 HS signees are rated in the composite top 230 in the nation. That's far from underwhelming.

I tend to look at this way, if we replicate that over the next 2 recruiting cycles, we'll be fine because I have no doubt about the staff's ability to develop guys THEY have brought in.

Hopefully the holes will be plugged during NSD when late bloomers pop up

To answer the original question - yes, at least on the surface, I am concerned. You hate to lose guys who proved they are good enough to start. That said, like another poster indicated, maybe NIL money is involved or maybe there is something about some of these kids that BN does not like and either the kids is not willing to buy-in or BN doesn't think they "fit" in his program. We'll probably never know for sure. I just hope we end up getting guys through the portal who are as good or better than the starters we lost.

Honestly the portal is starting to piss me off. Two reasons:

    a. The Mizz coaching staff does a great job identifying Dominic Lovett, recruits him, gets him to sign, develop him and he shines. So what happens next? “Ehhh time to go to a powerhouse, but thanks coach!” Don’t like it for the coaches of lower prestige teams because how can you really move up in the world if your top players get plucked by the bigger brand teams?

    b. If Lovett wasn’t staying at Mizz, why didn’t we get in that mix. I (and others) have mentioned we need a Van Jefferson impact transfer at WR. Well damn Lovett was that guy. Come on BN, you can’t think our WR room is good to go. That was the move to make.

Not even close. Someone else did a year-by-year recap of average player rating in a separate post. This is our highest player rating class (so far) since Urban Meyers last class in 2010.

    Edit: Here's the comparison
    Mullen vs Napier Recruiting

what I read on reddit or twitter. During one of the spaces or something, our LB S. James said guys were leaving because they weren't buying in and not putting in the work required of them. I'm not even a secondary source for this. Just read something that someone else said and no citations was given. But if true, then I'm 100% okay with them leaving. They were Mullen recruits who played in Mullen's system that didn't encourage competition and job taking so, I'm okay with getting a new breed of player in here who wants to compete and either take a job or keep their job by holding off the young bucks. That's nature of life and I like it.

Mullen's classes were average of about .905. The gap between CBN and Mullen is greater than the gap of CBN to Bama, GA, and OSU. If that persists we are in far better shape as the difference in points per game between Mullen and CBN is small compared to the difference that recruiting an actual mediocre at worst defense will have. Mullen didn't have a single decent defense at UF. All were tragic worst in decades. McElwain and Muschamp far excelled Mullem on defense.
