Zook’s guys played hard for him. That was never the problem. Look at the 2004 F$U game in Tally how he was carried off the field.

Zook just didn’t have the personality to run the show. He didn’t make the best assistant hires and let too much of the noise get to him.

In 2003 with a bunch of freshmen he beat LSU and Arky on the road and Georgia in Jax.

We were unlucky to have Miami in 02 and 03 but also lost to Ole Miss twice and Miss State.

Good recruiter, good UF ambassador, just not HC material.

Foley overall did a good job. His biggest mistake was either not agreeing that we needed to further invest in the football program or not having enough chutzpah to grab whatever current President we had on board by the collar and drag him down to the Athletic facility and make him understand that we desperately needed to keep up with the Jones.

I was a little down on CBN after the 6-6 season, but that bowl game performance, after rallying all the troops the way he did. That was inspirational.

Many comments in support of Napier emphasize that he is trying to "change the culture." What exactly does that mean? Culture can be seen as the way of life for a group or a society, that includes codes of manners, social comportment, dress, language, etc.
So when you folks say BN is trying to "change the culture"- he is embarking on a fool's errand.
This is high level football and in the era of the Transfer Portal and NIL and within a broader society that values winning and making money that leads to status among all- how do you folks suggest that a culture change can occur?
The pressure to win will always overtake seemingly higher ideals of "culture."
What BN needs to do is win ball games with quality players that he recruits and/ or lures from Portal, and superior game preparation and game day management. You get top players by convincing them that you are a "winner." Culture is a bit too fuzzy a concept to hang your hat on.
In other words.... Just win baby

When it comes to winning percentage, the current football and basketball programs are in the bottom 1/3 of the SEC. I don't think this is going to change for either program in the foreseeable future. On the other hand there was a time when I didn't think there was a chance either team would a national championship and I was wrong about that. So basically I'm just the average fan that knows nothing. I do know that following these teams today is very frustrating and not a lot of fun.

Not only is culture "fuzzy" under today's environment is is also "fluid". Each addition or subtraction of a player essentially changes the culture. You may want to maintain consistency, but I doubt many would pass up the number one recruit just because he didn't fit into our definition of "culture". Addressing all these nebulous variables without addressing things that are quantifiable seems inherently foolish, short sighted and counterproductive. On the field coaching decisions are quantifiable, administrative decisions are quantifiable, those are the things that should merit our attention.

They are allegedly evaluating as young as 7th graders and building 4 years out. During the season they are split into groups that have individual plays for groups of down and distance. It’s super analytical and situational and arguably did not work because of the awful game mgmt we saw.
But with the last batch of transfers, not much activity in the portal, lack of 5 stars, getting waxed by FSU in the portal and Miami on the recruiting trail… it seems like a mess. A couple frmr gators close to program have said this is not part of the plan and it seems like a mess over there. I hope they’re wrong…. But this looks bad right now. They got only 1 out of top 5-10 targets and a sub-par transfer QB. The only hope is that Napier lands a killer 24 class and UAA gets on board with NIL

His biggest problem was that he followed a legend. No OC would have sufficed after SOS. In addition, Ole Miss was a 10-win team in 2003 with Eli Manning at QB. You mentioned Miami already, and two games were robberies by the officials (The Swindle and 2004 Tennessee).

Had he followed anyone after Muschamp. he'd probably still be here.

Such is life. I appreciate what Zook did. He cared about UF and set the stage for Urban to succeed. No shame in not being HC material.

Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face. Lumpy had a plan, Butters had a plan, Mullen had a plan.

A successful plan accounts for unexpected developments.

Lets see how Napier can adjust. But if what you say about a mess and Napier and company telling the UAA that things have not gone according to planned, that plus a 6-7 record adds to some really bad optics.

I really expected a better nickname for Mullen with this post. I mean Lumpy and Butters will definitely draw chuckles. I would edit. :D

Meyer is an elite coach. He could have followed SOS, Spurrier, Mullen, Champ, or Mac and won a title.

I'm trying to stay positive and not rag on BN but after witnessing some puzzling and predictable play calling and his game management-- plus some of his hires (DC and Special Teams come to mind), it makes me doubt whether he is ready for the big time. The 2022 squad had the inherited talent to beat a Utah team that was ranked in top 5 and is heading for the Rose Bowl after destroying USC and the Trojans' playoff hopes. One can argue that the Gators regressed as the season went on losing to all rivals and Vandy, concluding with the embarrassment in Vegas against a solid but less than elite Pac 12 team. The recruiting haul has been good but not elite- not one 5-star in the mix-- and the Portal activity seems to be moving in the wrong direction with some good players heading out and some QB named Mertz coming in. Hardly the results that would inspire great confidence.
I have no choice but to give BN the benefit of the doubt and wish him all success as he no doubt will be here for at least two more years. I just wish we had more tangible evidence to inspire more confidence.
