I was really high on Mullen. I loved the hire. I loved his play calling and game planning. I really didn't pay attention during those cycles as to how terrible the recruiting was though. I was just enjoying the 10 win seasons and beating our rivals.

Then before the 21 season, I read a Miles column on just how bad our recruiting had been. I did a double take. The course we were on was unsustainable. Now, he we are.

At least we have a coach who understands the challenge and what must be done. It's going to be a difficult and painstaking road to get back.

    On signing day it’s similar

But it’s yet to be seen how many of Napiers guys make it to fall. If the class holds then it’s better than Mullen

The problem for Mullen wasn’t the recruits themselves, it was the coaching. He would often put guys out of positions basically turning a legit 4 star guy into a lotto ticket at another position

Do you guys remember a few years ago Clemson signed small classes and because of the lack of numbers didn't land in the top 5 often.

Here is an interesting background on Clemson's last two Nattys...

2012 recruiting class composite rankings was #19
    2013 #15
    2014 #16
    2015 #9
    2016 #11 National Champions
    2017 #16
    2018 #7 National Champions

So, they had the #19...#15...#16...#9... NATTY, composite recruiting classes and won it all.

Then the 4 years prior to the other National Championship they signed the #9...#11...#16...#7... NATTY, and won it all again.

You guys need to chill out about Napier's recruiting class. After he gets the last few players he needs out of the portal he will be fine... our team will be fine.

ok….is there any other examples you can use besides Clemson? Cause if it’s that simple, everyone would be doing it imo

Problem with your line of thinking is Clemson is in the ACC playing a ACC schedule, as well as Clemson also recruited elite QBs. Napier failed to bring in a single top 20 player from the state of Florida this cycle, if you can't recruit the very best in your own state, it simply does not bode well from a competitive standpoint long term in the SEC or for a run at a national title.

He got the elite QB and I was hoping some of the other needed pieces would fall in place, but they haven't yet. Still in desperate need of serviceable OL, DT and LB's. Looks like WR was addressed this cycle, but we certainly didn't get much production out of our Fr WR's in 2022. Time will tell.

It took Dabo 7 seasons to get to a title game. I think it will take Napier as long.

The instate recruiting will improve over time.

Look at it this way, we have a top 10 class and are nowhere near a top ten team.
Most losing programs (which we are one at the moment), don't recruit at this level.
scUM was the exception, but only because of Ruiz money.

Napier spent time at Clemson, so this was not some random tidbit of information, Bobby. :D

He beat teams from the SEC that year to win it all. But yeah, in the ACC there is probably less wear and tear on the players, because of that it is an easier schedule and conference to play in.

Two programs stand out to me that showed patience during rebuilds Clemson and Michigan. Hell Harbaugh was a proven commodity in college and the pros and crapped the bed at Michigan. He would have been gone if he didn’t take a pay cut. We need to give him time to build the program back but we should see sustainable growth with a good foundation. Hopefully it starts a great OC hire soon.

Also, Mullen's best recruits are on the defensive side. Check it out. And of those few offensive players Mullen recruited, only one amounted to anything. EJ is still hopping portals in hopes of being a starter. He might want to check out UMass.

Clemson also had an elite DC, which we don't currently have.

or they never made it for grades, they assaulted someone or got booted for various behavior issues, visa problems, health issues…. I can’t keep up with the list of reasons why his players never contributed.

And mich didn’t rebuild with too 3 classes. They won’t win it all but they are a solid program and they have a shot.
