Rivals website has Clemson in 2015 as 4th, 2016 as 6th… which as Distant says isn’t top 5. Now the 2015 ranking would have impacted the 2016 year, but it’s one rating service.
The real problem to the argument is in 2017 Rivals had them ranked… 22nd. Now again it is one rating service but it’s the one chosen.
I’m okay with the narrative that top 5 (composite) recruiting rankings are a good indicator of future success, especially when they are consecutive for a number of years… but Clemson does appear somewhat of an outlier in that conclusion.

    First- good post.
Your post leads me to ask why Clemson is the outlier.
Is it their easier schedule? I would say yes of course.

But as a BIG stats guy, I look inside the numbers.
And frankly the ranking services encourage and reward the churn em and burn em model, where schools sign a lot of guys each year and then flush the large percent who don't develop quickly. Obv UGA and Bama have perfected the model.
Sucks for the kids who are flushed, but Kirby and Saban gotta do what they gotta do.
They are not here to care for the kids- they are here to win games!

Clemson (Dabo) took a different approach. He values each kid he signs, and tries to develop them.
Not all will work out, but he only signs who he thinks he needs.
He doesn't care about these rankings, so each recruit is far more valuable than at UGA or Bama- which is more of a meat grinder.

I like this model better, but whether CBN can pull it off remains to be seen.
As someone else said, Clemson had some great coordinators- best in the nation type.

I love our team, but we don't have that.

Dabo didn’t do anything different. Sign good players hire good coordinators

The reason Clemson worked is because of their run of elite QB play. An Elite QB can help cover up less than elite talent at other places. If Rashada and/or Lagway become a Deshaun Watson or Trevor Lawrence than UF can have similar success as Clemson did as ling as they can put at least a good defense and support around them. However, even top tier, generational talent needs good support if not elite. Even if Rashad/Lagway are Watson/Lawrence, without a strong enough support they become Lamar Jackson, a great college player who never won anything as a team

Clemson got every "little" thing right during their glory years. They had very little player attrition, very little coach attrition, their commits basically never de-committed and their signees always made it to campus.

On top of that, they managed to hit it big at quarterback -- they got Deshaun Watson, arguably the greatest player in program history, and then Trevor Lawrence, a legitimately generational prospect. Hard to overstate how big that was for them. Look at how they've performed the last two years without a big-time QB.

They’ve taken a dip of late. But they ran Bama out of the stadium twice in recent years.

The question is why Clemson is the outlier, so by definition they did something different.
I think we actually outrecruited them from 2013-2019.

As was pointed out above, they did all the little things right.

Again, sign good players. Sprinkle on top level qb play. Play weak teams. Only about 3 games mattered. Vs 7-8 for a sec school.
Not saying they aren’t good. Just saying they probably wouldn’t made the playoff in the sec.

And again I remind they smoked Bama twice when they were pulling in #4 and #6 classes.
