We just played with a QB that was as physically gifted as they come and ended with a losing record and he threw as many INTs as mertz. At this point I'd take a stetson Bennett type for a stop gap. Mertz can do fine.
Logic says that mertz doesn't come here without some assurances about other transfer QBs because he could go elsewhere and start. Riding the pine would not help him. Yes he could get beat out by Miller or rashada (if he signs} but that's a known risk which is better than the "known unknown risk."
The other side of the story is the decline in 2022. Commentator concludes Mertz was on the wrong team ...
I think 3 years as a starting qb and one as the back up on a Wisconsin team known for great o lines and great rbs is enough of a resume - and a poor one - to know what Mertz is. At Wisconsin he usually had meh wrs, which he will have next year at Uf, while WI has a TE drafted every year in 3-5th round, which he will not have at UF. He played in the big ten west, with heavy hitters like Purdue and Nebraska and northwestern and still wasn’t any good. Agains the SEC, he is likely chopped liver. on top of that, his performance was so good it helped to get his coach fired mid season. Not a ringing endorsement.
stetson Bennett is Carl Lewis compared to Mertz. Tom Brady may be more mobile. Mertz has been awful. Being born in WI they are my second fav team after UF. I watch a ton of their games. He has gotten worse each year and Wisconsin fans are happy to see him go.
he had -65 yards rushing. Bennett had like 250. I’d guess Georgia has a great OL but Wisconsin is also known for pumping out first round OL every year. Also- Wisconsin ran the ball on nearly 60% of their plays. Mertz is a statue, like Michelangelo’s David, except slower.
