My completely ignorant take: The NIL has a sort of post-season free agency feel to it and right now the silly folk are either listening to "agents" as to what it will take to secure one or they are listening to the money folks and acting desperate. Methinks Napier has sent the signal that they are not as dire as to go all out for a "quality" QB whereas he will sign a player or two to compete in the spring. This feels like a one-of-two signing (unless he feels as if Brown/Rashada is prepared to take over) and so we will get one more of these guys. And perhaps a couple of the better-equipped-today ones will find themselves on the outside (welcome to reality!) and will take what Napier thinks is appropriate. The fun comes in the spring and not now.
I wanted McCall and on paper Mertz seems underwhelming. The one thing I did notice with the video above is that is seems to be FAR more involved and emotional than AR was. Every TD pass I saw, he was running into the endzone to congratulate the receiver. Maybe its nothing, but I always disliked AR's body language for the most part of the time
Say what you will but this kid is a better option than ANYTHING currently sitting on the roster (not including Rashada in that). People forget that Billy lost Kitna without ANY notice in the most insane way barely three weeks ago. It feels like a scramble drill because it IS one
That’s correct, Leak replaced him after Martin sustained a concussion in the Miami game. Martin later transferred to Furman and played well there.
Does anyone know if he (Mertz) is playing in the bowl game for Wisconsin. The news articles I found weren’t sure.
We’ve been in the market for the mid to low 4* kids. We went after good web’s and that may be the way to go without ridiculous overspending on talent that may never develop. If we are going to spring high, use it on proven transfers, players already in the system, or qB’s.
As of last week we had Miller and Browne at QB. That is it. So we need 2 more. JR would be a true fr. I think taking an experienced potential back up is the move. Now I'd prefer an experienced quality starter like McCall or Leary (who went to UK), but if McCall did not give us good vibes then we had to take Fred and Ethel's grandson. Maybe he can bring Dino, Desi and Billy with him.
You cannot judge Mertz on his Wisconsin resume'. Their offense is worse than ours. They are really a run first team.
