Because I'm talking about the perception of the average 17 year old off the street. You or I preferring Gainesville to Tuscaloosa has absolutely no bearing on this at all. In fact our opinions are likely heavily skewed to Gainesville. Why bother responding to my post if you're just going to add that you've been to both and think Tuscaloosa sucks? I think it does too, but I bet that if you survey 100 random top prospects they would rank the cities about the same - but in one you'll be in the CFP next year whereas the other you'll maybe win half your games.

Recruits used to come to Florida for the exciting offenses and excellent defense. Now we don't have either and we're in, to be completely honest, a very average college town. It will be a challenge to recruit against other average to good/great college towns/cities especially if they have great odds to win titles and get your best shot at the NFL.

The fact you've visited Tuscaloosa is just as useful as the I own a pair of New Balance shoes and think they are just as good as Nikes. You think recruits would agree?

 

Nothing in this exchange makes me dense. I personally think Gainesville is a more attractive place to live than Tuscaloosa. I did not say Tuscaloosa sucks, as you accused me of saying. I said Gainesville >> Tuscaloosa. Period. I’ve been to both - telling you that also set you off. You seem easily set off pal.

I also think Austin >> Gainesville. Athens is nice too. But in my opinion Gainesville >> Tuscaloosa. I do not claim to know how a 17 year old would look at it, although Florida, and an hour drive to beaches would seem to be more attractive than in the middle of nowhere, Alabama.

I do agree that Miami would in all likelihood be more attractive to a teenager than any of the other college towns mentioned.

Athens is pretty great....Tuscaloosa is an armpit compared to Gainesville.

Precisely, people seem to have a lot of faith in what CBN can do, but tend to dismiss the observables on the field. CBN has been coaching for more than 15 years, he should have his masters by now.

Gainesville and Tuscaloosa have very little in common besides it being extremely hot.
The area where students live in Tuscaloosa is so much a smaller area then compared to Gainesville. everything in tuscaloosa is in walking distance of campus - off campus houses/appartments etc. Tuscaloosa is an expensive a** college town though!

I still don't understand how in game one we can play with and beat a very good Utah team, but the longer this staff had with the players the worse we got.

on to next year -- we should only lose to Utah, Georgia, and LSU next year.
But i expect we will drop at least 1 more sec game and maybe FSU. Have the gators ever played a regular season non SEC game west of the mississippi?
Going into a season with no idea of who the starting QB is, is never a good thing.

I believe that we played USC in Los Angeles as the back side of a home and home in 1984. (?). If memory serves me correctly, the game ended in a tie.

 

Many of you have unrealistic expectations. It started after we hired Napier. I could go back and cut and paste how many of you expected no less than a 9 win season with many of you going further saying 10 win, SEC champions, even a CFP invite were on the table. I said 6-6, forget the bowl game. Yet going into the bowl game, many of you again expected us to beat a 9-3 team on the road without AR, who got us to the bowl game, was responsible for beating Utah earlier in the year. To top it off, do it with a 4th string QB who has never snapped a single ball at the collegiate level. To a new batch of receivers except for Pearsall, who by the way is the best Gator in the last few years. Of all the players who could have sat this game, he was the best of them other than VMiller.

Oregon St played a smart defensive plan - ignore Miller and stack the line and stop the run. It worked to perfection. We just couldn't run the offense we have been running all season with Miller. He was a game manager, the entire game plan was to run the ball to set up the pass. 33 carries for 39 yards. The longest run was a 15 yard run by Miller. Johnson had a 14 yard run but had zero yards on the other 10 carries. Defensively, I was amazed we played as well as we did without VMiller because all season when he didn't play, we were the worst defense in all of college football.

Next year is when you start the clock. It's when he starts getting his recruits in the system. First gotta get these Mullen stinkers off the team. They are a cancer.

I do think BN's biggest failure this year was not purging the roster once he took the top and using the portal far more. Glad they addressed that in the article.

It hits on some of the points I’ve been pondering.

Where are we with the culture change and what had it done for us?

I expected a cohesive team that played solid, fundamental football at the end of year 1 and only lost when out-talented. This is exactly what Urban Meyer gave us in his first year.

The South Carolina game this year seemed like everything clicked. It seemed like we turned the corner. And then we had 3 clunkers after that. I can understand the Oregon State loss with a depleted roster, but I cannot understand the lack of effort, disorganization, and downright hot mess that we put on display.

I will also say we need to hit the portal but not the way the article advocates. Recruiting and stacking top HS talent is what will lead to long-term success.

 

Giving a mulligan year I completely disagree with. Too many others did more in their first year this year for us to be writing a year off. 6-7 with loss to Vandy not something anyone could have predicted.
