I was looking through an article from 2016 regarding ESPN’s Total QBR formula and it says that it is actually driven by EPA (Expected Points Added). So it is actually calculating how successful each attempted play is and is creating a stat that reflects efficiency rather a value. Similar to Will Miles’s Yards Above Replacement he uses.
Sounds very convoluted and more opinion driven than stats driven. I don't need the QBR to see which QB is the best. There are 4 or 5 stats that I use to determine which ones pass the muster. To me McCall is the best available regardless of the QBR rating.
Yeah I think there are a number of guys that could come in and be capable even if they are not elite. Miller might not be elite but I could see him putting up similar passing stats as AR next year. I am not very familiar with McCall even though his stats are nice.
There are articles on other publications that say that he is better than any freshman recruit out there, so that speaks to how proven of a commodity that he's already viewed as. That is NOT hyperbole. In only 3 year 78 TDs, with only 8 INTs and a 70% completion percentage? over 8,000 total yard s and 16 rushing TDs to boot. He can run the ball effectively enough if need to run. But he is accurate and that's what we need in a QB.
Supposedly is was tests that got in the way, but I call BS on that. Slick Freeze had another QB coming in at the same time, and I'll bet McCall didn't like that idea.
