I‘m glad we kicked the FG. That streak means something. I certainly don’t like that we have almost had that streak end several times in the last few years, incl the safety game against FSU at home and last year vs UGA. But it’s still nice to have that record. Like a consecutive hits streak in baseball. I personally thought out lead in that stat was much bigger than it was. There are 9 teams in the top 20 that have present day streaks going, so as soon as we get shut out the longevity of that record will be short lived I have to believe. So for now the streak lives and I am happy for it. But I’m also ready to start scoring 40 pts/game and wining real championships again.
It’s like someone who gets hit by a train and survives. Thank God they survived, but they still got hit by a f’in train!
Whatever. McAfee can pound sand. I'm happy with the decision. I'll take keeping that streak alive over the 1-10,000 chance we actually convert a 23-yard pass on 4th down yesterday.
I'm not proud, but there is no chance in hell we convert that 4th down. Not with what I saw on the field yesterday. You'd be better off putting your hopes into a lottery ticket. So, that said, I'll take the FG and the streak over some feckless and pathetic 4th down attempt. Pat McAfee and "the nation" can suck a bag of . . . . . .
More like cash in the three chips you still have and don't walk out of the Casino completely broke. At least you can get a cab back to the hotel instead of hoofing it.
I was so mad when he didn’t try at the 20 or so with about 10 minutes left. It would say to me that he has no wherewithal about our tradition and well, our record. Had we not scored, it would have been really bad I think.
That bowl game (along with a lot of others) is a participation trophy anyway so why not keep something positive about it going. Watching the few other bowls on Friday, why did it seem like UAB, UTSA, and the majority of other teams look/act like they wanted to be there? Seems like we are usually the team that doesn't act like they want to be there. Between all the portal entrys and NFL opt outs, the coaching staff should instill some pride in this group. We aren't the Spurrier teams or Meyer teams anymore, can't just go out there and beat them with talent and scheme. Have to develop a take no prisoners attitude on the coaches and the players.
I guess I did a poor job at making my point. This--"we kicked a field goal to save a scoring streak even though we got our asses kicked"--thinking is what builds losers. No one gives a rat's ass about that streak. It's a participation trophy mindset. Question: which would you have preferred in this game? That we fought and were in it all the way and lost 7-0, or that we got our asses kicked and lost 30-3 and saved that meaningless streak? I know what I would chose.
never put 2 & 2 together. 88 is the year I graduated. It's kinda cool to think we haven't been shut out since I graduated esp since I'm old as shit.
While I agree McAfee is an obnoxious jackass, the optics of a pointless FG (just to keep a meaningless streak alive) are not good for the program. Like I mentioned in my previous post, Florida is the laughingstock of college football right now. It makes us seem as though the streak is more important than actually competing, and anyone who doesn't think that's in the minds of potential recruits is delusional. Recruiters sitting in kid's living rooms will be selling how their team competed for 60 mins for the win, and not just some program kicking FG's just to keep a pointless streak going. Do I think that characterization of the game is fair for the players? Absolutely not....but outside of the PAC-12, that's all this game is being remembered for.
who put the FG ahead of competing? It was 4th and 23, Napier clearly didn’t care about the streak or he would have kicked at the 7 minute mark 4th and 2 from the twenty. But at the end, going for it 4th and 23 made no sense. And the kids, many backups, deserved to see a few points go up for their efforts. It was the broadcast crew that made a deal out of it, not the staff or the players. So gives two craps what people say or think?
