Zook followed Steve Spurrier. Napier took on a team buried in 10+ years of mediocrity and negligent recruiting. Stop with the comparisons to Zook
You're right. In many ways, Zook had it worse. Napier came in with little pressure, with the Gators going 14-11 (.560) the previous two years. Zook was expected to continue what SOS did, as though SOS was the New Normal. As horrible as the last 12 years have been (outside of 2012, 2015, 2018 and 2019), perhaps some Gators finally realize that we could fare far worse than finishing 8-5 every year. People say that we came close to winning 2-3 more games, but we had two wins with a 3-point margin. We also could have done worse. This is why I don't endlessly whine about firing coaches or coordinators. I want Napier to do well here, and as head coach, I have to trust his choice of coordinators and position coaches. He's not a head coach with no experience like Zooker or Muschamp. We need to give him a chance, and if his staff isn't cutting it, he alone must accept responsibility. I simply dread us going through the endless 3 year cycle. Since 2000, we've had 7 head coaches. Among the major programs: Alabama: 4 Auburn: 4 Clemson: 2 FSU: 4 Georgia: 2 Iowa: 1 Kansas State: 3 LSU: 4 Miami: 6 Michigan: 4 Michigan State: 4 Miss State: 5 Nebraska: 5 NC State: 3 North Carolina: 5 Notre Dame: 5 Ohio State: 5 Oklahoma: 3 Oklahoma State: 2 Oregon: 6 Penn State: 3 Pitt: 4 South Carolina: 4 Stanford: 5 Tennessee: 5 Texas: 4 Texas A&M: 5 UCLA: 5 USC: 5 Utah: 3 Virginia Tech: 3 West Virginia: 5 Wisconsin: 4 I am hoping this cycle ends with Billy, and I'm rooting for him.
I have to say, I’ve never felt so good after a loss as this one! 6-7 doesn’t feel so bad since we kept the scoring streak alive. Did our fans storm the field after the game? We don’t get to do that at home, so I thought we might try it on the road. Might have been a first for fans from the losing team to do so. Anyone remember years ago when Florida unexpectedly beat FSU in Tallahassee and tore down FSU’s goal posts? Did anyone see the improvement on our team from having those 15 (or was it six) practices? Looks like OSU improved, too. Can’t wait until all those 4 star players come in next year and hopefully, don’t play like true freshmen. And, the portal, goodness, we need to get some quarterbacks to come in and not leave us hanging like Richardson and Kitna did this year. Yes, Napier has lots of work to do.
No more scholarship limits would destroy college football. This already happens to some degree, but you'll see a lot more of the Saban's and Kirby's of the world recruiting a guy not because they'll use him, necessarily, but so they won't go somewhere else.
He did that very effectively. OTOH, there were far fewer schools playing football back then. I also think that many didn't offer full rides either.
Hello RH. Yeah, you know how Fandom is: we concentrate on: Future is always brighter, entitlement, traditions, facilities, alumni, etc. We tend to ignore facts (I do). The fact is I am disappointed in the season and CBNs results in year 1. You lay it our succinctly. The challenges are immense. We are in a two year trof that Gator Nation is not used to. All things considered I will be patient and look forward to what kind of class comes in, how the transfer portal is used and spring practice. I also expect UF to be better. Napier knows this and what the business realities are.
