We celebrate Loving at our house, wife's parents had to leave their state to get married back in the day. Mindboggling that we have to be passing laws to protect this right, but here we are.

Interracial marriages to get added protection under new law

The Respect for Marriage Act, which passed the Senate l ast week, has been picking up steam since June, when the Supreme Court overturned the federal right to an abortion. The ruling included a concurring opinion from Justice Clarence Thomas that suggested the high court should review other precedent-setting rulings, including the 2015 decision legalizing same-sex marriage.

While much of the attention has been focused on protections for same-sex marriages, interracial couples say they are glad Congress also included protections for their marriages, even though their right to marry was well-established decades ago.

“It’s a little unnerving that these things where we made such obvious progress are now being challenged or that we feel we have to really beef up the bulwark to keep them in place,” said Ana Edwards, a historian who lives in Richmond.

Sad that it had to even come to this, but glad it’s done.

Glad this is getting codified before the Gilead caucus takes over the house and tries to dictate who can marry whom.

Nah. It's the "PrO FrEeDOm" people. They "love" freedom, but not freedom if I choose to marry a dude with that freedom.

How can these people not see that they are on the side of evil?

If I'm playing devil's advocate here, those who oppose gay marriage will probably ask whether Obama was "evil" as recently as 2012. Personally, I'm sure he was on board before that, but that's another issue. That's how contentious it was. The country has moved faster on this issue than any I can think of in my lifetime. I think that's a great thing, and the polls I've seen indicate support anywhere from 60-70%. Social conservatives who are still mad about gay marriage are now having to focus almost entirely on trans people. That's not to say that gay marriage wouldn't be banned in some states in the Supreme Court allowed it, of course.

Yep. I think Obama probably didn’t oppose gay marriage in reality but had to say so for real politic. And didn’t Biden get in at least some warm water with Obama for saying he supported same sex marriage - I seem to remember that.

My recollection is that Biden beat Obama to the punch on the public endorsement, whether Biden did that to steal the thunder or whether they planned it that way to take some of the heat off Obama for doing it.

I consider myself to be a fiscal conservative but some so called conservatives seem to want to go backwards.

Has anyone publicly opposed interracial marriage and threatened to to legally challenge it?

Yes, the ruling in Dobbs attacks the legal underpinning of Loving v Virginia. The same legal arguments that overturned the right to abortion could be used to overturn the right to marry who you choose.

If they had not codified this, they may have regretted it later as there is no doubt there is a portion of the gop that would love to ban same sex marriage for sure (and probably some backwards states that would go a step farther and go after interracial marriage).

Is that from Thomas opinion, or was there something else in the ruling?

Probably not, but with he and his monster of a wife being grandfathered out of any restrictions.
