Meh, its not worth going back and forth here. You say you don't know therefore this is a good trade. I say we don't know so there is no way you trade a bad guy who can kill people for a freakin basketball player. The only reason this is such a huge thing and you guys want her back so bad is because shes black and lesbian.

Let this be a big white Trump supporting NFL lineman and not one of you give two chits. Lets not try to play games, I don't have time for that BS around here.

Is one death from this guy worth the trade? Lets say we know for a fact he will only kill one person and thats it. Is that still worth your trade? Or are you just hoping that he never does anything bad ever again to anyone to justify this trade?

What if the stars alligned (in a bad way) and your family member was the one person killed by this man after his release? Hypothetically speaking, would it be a good trade to you then?

By that logic we shouldn't bother arresting anyone ever. After all someone else will just take their place, right?

Anyways it's not a very good trade for us or anyone outside Russia, but it kind of had to be done. Really should have included the release of the marine as well though.

At the end of the day she chose to break the law in Russia which is a pretty poor idea overall. Sets a bad precedent and forces the US to cover for her poor decision making.

I'm happy she is released and home to her family. It is a great deal for the Griners. It is not a great deal for the US.

I like that people think its not a supply problem, and are thinking a crafty middle man is going to make or break arms dealing around the world. All these people do is resell stuff we or the Russians sold people decades ago. Anyone can do that lol. Viktor Bout doesnt produce anything!

It’s really not a question of “if it’s worth it”. She’s a US citizen whose detainment is manifestly unjust (this is reminiscent of the American kid who was detained tortured and sent back brain dead by NK) We have an obligation to make reasonable effort to secure her release. If it were you marooned in a penal colony.I’d support similar efforts to secure your release.

ithink you’ve revealed your biggest issue with her release though. She’s black and lesbian and this was orchestrated by the Biden Admin

One of the great benefits of this board is that it gives one some insight into the minds of the American populace, and it’s kind of ugly.

Joke is on Putin. US gave Viktor Bout the COVID vaccine to track his movements.

It gives you more insight to the minds of older white men than the general populace. I dont think the reaction here is representative outside that.

It’s a situation with only bad choices. Let this be a big gay black woman and I bet you don’t give two chits. Oh wait.

    Let's recap, shall we?
    - The claim was made that the world is a more dangerous place today with Bout's release than it was yesterday with him in prison. That, of course, implies that international arms dealing had slowed significantly with him in prison and is about to increase with his release.
    - I asked if any of us know enough about international arms dealing to know if that is true.
    - You accused me of excusing the trade.
    - I responded by saying I wasn't excusing anything, just that I don't know enough about international arms dealing to know what impact imprisonment had and his release will have on it. I asked if you did know enough.
    - You didn't answer the question, of course, instead claimed that the only reason I wanted her released is because she's a black lesbian and that you're simply above talking BS.

    Yeah, that's it.

Nothing but bad choices. That’s why this was done after the election. Definitely not a slam dunk but I’d have done it.

What's ironic is that only 17% of the people who voted in this poll thought the US should make the trade. Judging from the posts since the trade happened you would think it was 60-40 the other way.

I doubt that was a consideration. If it was and they could have done it sooner but kept her in longer out of some stupid political calculus, then that's incredibly messed up.

I suspect you’re not going to find much of anyone outside of “yay Biden did something” cheerleaders who thinks releasing one of the world’s most prolific illegal arms dealers to secure the release of an idiot who took hash oil to Russia was a good idea.

If Trump had released El Chapo to get back that idiot that drove into Mexico with a rifle, that would have been a comparable (and equally stupid) trade.

Conversely, cranky conservatives are apparently the only people who could possibly think that freeing a guy who was in prison for selling anti-aircraft missiles to a designated terrorist organization and conspiracy to murder US citizens might not be the best idea around.
