Yeah, his situation is quite different from Griner's. If Griner was accused of espionage I doubt they'd have done a swap like this.

For who? Seems like everyone got what they wanted. What's the situation where only we get what we want? How does that work? Its not sports, the only leverage we have here is a person staying in jail longer.

“He’s a dangerous arms dealer!” says the country that sends Ukraine a daily cache of high-powered weapons

For both the US and the world as a whole. If you can't see that trading an entertainer for one of the most dangerous arms dealers in history is a bad decision, then I can't help you. The world is a more dangerous place today than it was yesterday.

Russians read the same news we read and KNOW that the US is funneling weapons, into Ukraine, for the expressed purpose of killing fellow Russians.

And then Americans are shocked to learn that Putin and the war are STRONGLY supported in Russia.

Ah, so you are upset by your own unquantifiable geopolitical calculus about world safety. Good luck with that.

Do any of us know whether arms dealing slowed down while he was in prison?

Before anyone has to explain their position on here, shouldn't YOU be the one to explain why you think its ok to trade a basketball player for a known terrorist?

And you're so blinded by your need to score partisan points that you'll take losses as a win. Good luck with that.

Yikes..... I truly hope you are just playing devils advocate here. Unreal how anyone can excuse this. If it were Trump who just did this, this place would be on fire.

I’m not excusing anything. I asked a question. I certainly don’t claim to know the impact his imprisonment has had on international arms dealing. Do you?

It’s pretty clear Russia doesn’t want to release Wheelan or has a very specific person(s) they want in exchange. Let’s not forget that they kept him even as they released Trevor Reed.

We made a reasonable trade for Brittney.

A captured arms dealer wasn't on the table for return until they got one of our basketball players. If they wanted him back, the captured spy needed to be on the table as well.

I’m sure his absence hasn’t impacted the global arms trade
