Is there a similar law about owning primates? I remember a local store owner when I was a kid used to have a monkey in a cage. It was cool at the time, but make me sad thinking back on it. The owner told me that the feds eventually told him he had to get rid of it but he seemed to recall that was because the monkey didn't have a mate or something. I'm not sure what the federal law is re: other animals. I'm also not sure how hard it is to get certified under this big cat act. Appears current owners will be allowed to keep their cats but have to keep them a certain distance from the public.

Does this mean the Tennessee Titans can no longer own the Jaguars?

Here's maybe an interesting anecdote about owning large exotic cats. They had to be permitted and the owner had to meet the caging and confinement rules of FWC and were regularly inspected by FWC's wildlife inspectors to make sure of compliance. They don't need warrants to do this. As someone mentioned upthread, tigers and other large cats were very popular with drug traffickers. I know of one instance when DEA put on FWC T-shirts and accompanied the wildlife inspector on one of his scheduled inspections of a captive tiger in a Dade county compound. Once inside they were able to arrest the drug guy without having to mount a frontal assault. Large cats are known to turn on their owners - sometimes in unexpected ways.

Any permanent caging of animals for our “enjoyment” is reprehensible. IMO, as are zoos. We know enough now about the inner life of animals to cease such practices.

I'm with you on zoos. But I'm not against all "permanent caging of animals" as you put it. There's a big cat sanctuary here in NTX that takes them in from those this law targets as rescues. In a lot of cases, they can't be released back into the wild. The place is run almost entirely on donations and volunteers and from the public.

Does that mean LSU will have to release Mike back to the wild?

Zoos are a mixed bag for me. Keeping wild anaimals caged is shitty. At the same time zoos are a bastion for conservation and education. Zoos have helped remove animals from the endangered species list and taught us a lot about how to help them in the wild, envvironemntal issues, breeding, etc. They also inspire kids to have a love of animals and get into conservation. But yeah, at the same time, enclosing any living thing is shitty on the surface.

Yeah, I think zoos are more "woke" (for lack of a better word) now in that they think about these things but at the same time, they are still charging money to view captive animals

Have to feed those animals somehow. As humans take over the planet and sit on top of the food chain one has to wonder where are you going to put all of those animals if not in zoos or sanctuaries.

Habitat Preservation is key for large mammals and even more so for large predators. Or the zoo. I know which I prefer.
