Twenty-five people have been arrested in raids across Germany on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the government. The group of far-right and ex-military figures are said to have prepared for a "Day X" to storm the Reichstag parliament building and seize power. The plotters are said to include members of the extremist Reichsbürger [Citizens of the Reich] movement, which has long been in the sights of German police over violent attacks and racist and antisemitic conspiracy theories. Other suspects came from the QAnon movement who believe their country is in the hands of a mythical "deep state" involving secret powers pulling the political strings. Germany got it right. A certain segment of Americans would’ve thrown a hissy fit and called the coup-plotters “political prisoners”
These people could in fact be very dangerous, but they never seem to have any realistic plan that has any chance of resulting in in their purported goals. Why take so much risk for so little potential return? Can they all be that irrational?

It tends to work better when you have some kind of power base and legalistic approach to operate from (impeachment, contested elections, a friendly judiciary), see Bolivia, Peru, Brazil, even the USA etc. Also helps to have Western powers behind you, which isnt going to happen for something happening in Germany.
I think the January 6th folks at least thought they could intimidate/support Pence and/or at least delay the vote to make some other moves/arguments. It was a long shot, but they had the support of the sitting President (and millions of Americans) who was declaring the election fraudulent. There was also a bit of an analogy with the Brooks Brothers Riots. Seems a little less delusional to me than 25 people thinking they could overtake the government of Germany without that sort of structural support.

What about the attempted coup in Peru? Not by some right-wing crazies, but by the leftist president of the country. He tried to dissolve Congress and throw out the constitution. A leftist who thinks he's Donald Trump! That's crazy. And he probably thought, being Donald Trump, that he wouldn't go to jail. Wrong! You're right to point that out: there's zero difference between the extreme left and right, as far as I can tell, certainly not in their impact upon the citizenry.
I've always seen governance on the political spectrum as a circle. Maximizing freedom and equality at one point, and totalitarianism 180* away. One can get to that totalitarianist point by going either to the left or to the right. Once there, it matters not to the citizenry.
I'm thinking that they are regretting not preparing for a "Day Y" where the police arrest them and throw them in jail. I think this (and the U.S. version) proves that you can't ignore your mental patient population for too long.
