So this big budget movie dropped on HBO tonight. I didn’t catch it earlier due to 33% RT. Panned by critics. I thought it was excellent, a Cubist cinematic interpretation of the Business Plot, the Night at the Garden with the Bund, dramatically and artificially compressed and jumbled to use history to observe on current issues. DeNiro plays a Butler character. They make it explicit post-credits. The Business Plot was real, even if Russell takes dramatic liberties. Anyone that enjoyed Ultra, Rachel Maddox’s podcast, and can handle nonlinear disjointed plots, will enjoy. Fascism really had a moment in the US in the 30s, far more than most of Us realize. Reading Bradley Hart’s book recommended during podcast now (see below). And it may again if we don’t learn. Highly recommend the movie.
It appears that the appeal of fascism never dies. It just waits for times to come back out in the open. And we are living in such a time.
I don’t know anything about this and will probably never watch it but David O Russell is one of the true masters of the last 25+ years.
