Anthony Richardson - Declares for the NFL draft

Quincy Carter was a 2nd round pick by the Dallas Cowboys with less than stellar college stats. Quincy's junior year before entering the draft:

7 games, 1250 yards, 49.7% Completion, 6 TDs and 10 Ints.

I don't wish AR anything but the best but if I'm a GM, I'm not gambling on him with an early round pick.

 

There are many examples of QB's being drafted with an eye on the future. Jordan Love, Trey Lance are both recent examples. Aaron Rodgers was drafted late in the first round to learn behind Farve.

The team that selects Anthony is not going to expect him to start on day one. This will be to his benefit and he'll have time to learn if he's selected by a team that serious about his development. Whether he succeeds or not, will largely be up to him and how serious he is about doing the work. He has the physical skills and those are things you can't gain in the classroom.

Every draftee has their own track to earning playing time. If they were drafted in a position of need, then they get early playing time. If not, they sit and learn.

 

Stetson may as well go ahead and play in the bowl game.
He is already playing at his peak and has no upside, after this he is off to the job market like the rest of us (if the rest of us had the benefits that come with being a former local hero)

 

I hope he gets his degree.

 

I remember earlier in the year suggesting AR was thinking of going to the NFL and starting a thread about it and got destroyed by everyone on this forum and the thread deleted

 

I’ll bet he is in the first two rounds.
Too many “experts” have told him this.

I wondered if he was subconsciously thinking too much about the NFL scouts after seeing him throw his 3rd Hail Mary pass at the end of a half and/or game so far & high (Vince Carter could not have jumped up and caught it) into the stands that he was avoiding a INT for his stats. Thought the coaches should call him out on not giving his team a chance. Got a zillion disagree bacons and the next game, he did it again.

I didn't say AR was going to be expected to start year 1. QB typically aren't expected to play the first year, but most are expected to at least be ready to contribute in year 2.

Those 3 examples you gave are all guys who had pretty phenomenal college stats. Rodgers was a 63%+ guy with a roughly 4-to-1 TD/INT ratio. Trey Lance was a 65%+ with a 30-1 TD/INT ratio. Jordan Love was 61%+ and 2-1 TD/INT ratio. I think Love was a huge stretch to be a first rounder. I suspect the Packers regret that move.

But all 3 of these guys knew how to read a college defense. They didn't go into the NFL needing to be taught that. I think if there's one thing that the NFL GMs know is that it's the mental part of that game that is maybe the most important skill in determining which QBs make it in the NFL. There are very few QBs who make it based on raw physical skills.

I honestly don't know if AR has those mental skills. I'm not saying he doesn't, but up to now, I haven't seen them. The success he's had as a Gator is pretty much based on his raw physical skills. I don't think I can recall a game that he won with his passing or decision making. The games he's won were typically with his legs.

I hope he learns it and becomes an NFL superstar ... he very well may that. I'm just not convinced that unless he blows people away with the mental aspects of the combine and shows something I'm not sure he's shown yet, that a team is going to give up a first or second day draft pick for him. But it's happened before (Jordan Love and Jamarcus Russell come to mind) and I'm sure it will happen again.

 

I don’t care if a 1,000 of you disagree bacon me! You will never convince me that AR was laying it all out on the line each and every game! He knew damn well he was eyeing the draft and it showed !!!!! I’ve worked with D1 elite athletes and they don’t act or interview like he does!!! I’ve had guy ball on the court when they haven’t qualified for nationals or the national team! And it’s not them being soft it’s the passion they put into the work and the sweat week in and week out .. he wanted the pay day and based off his performances no one can argue that he left it all on the line .. Tebow ring a bell? The passion for the game isn’t there .. the passion for the money sticks out like a sore thumb!

 

It’s not an argument, it’s a statement about someone who really wanted to be on a team more than anything and did everything in his power to do it. Regardless of his after college endeavors. Simply saying we need more guys who as SOS would say wanted to be Gators.

Not everything has to be an argument.

 

He is NOT ready, and any team that wastes a 1 or 2 round pick on him, is not doing him any favors...

 

I don’t disagree with you at all. AR has always been about AR getting to the NFL.

My biggest doubt of him in the NFL is that I never saw the drive and effort from him at UF to be great. He had a plan from day one and that was 3 seasons then bolt. It was all about reaching the NFL. Once there, then what? Will the competitive streak, leadership abilities, drive to be great and not be outworked suddenly appear? His goal of getting there has been reached, what is the next goal? What motivation is there to work hard and get better when you have already accomplished the goal you had from the start?

IDK, hard to judge how ready he is or not when I’ve known for a while he was going pro after this season.

 

I’ve worked with guys and girls that have passion! The 4am daily and the work they put in while their friends are out doing things. I never once saw the passion! Go back and watch Tebow press conference, the” I will work harder than anyone “ go back and watch Richardsons pressers blah blah blah … he’s not a leader!!

 

Hope for the best for him, however I don't see him being picked early, more likely later rounds and if so that's not a bad thing. Late round draft and not as much pressure. There is a part of me that thinks maybe last two rounds.

 

Combine will tell the story. If he goes in there and turns heads, which I think is
very possible, I think quite a few here will be eating their words.

BTW, Marino scored terrible on Wunderlich, it cost him an early 1st round pick, but
we know how that ended.

 

As for his college statistics, context matters.

He had a poor WR corp, an unsettled coaching situation and the team he played for was 500 at best.

He will not be judged the same way that Peyton Manning and other QB's that led elite teams.

 

We had Trask who was also all Gator for 5 years, 3 of them riding the bench!
