Building a competent 3-deep roster every year... The best players will stay or go to the NFL with a few transferring. The 2nd stringers that can contribute? 70/30 stay/leave (Kimber/Helm) The 3rd stringers that can contribute? 50/50 leave/stay (Collier-Borders both leaving) 3rd/4th stringers that will barely contribute? 70% leave (Reese, McDowell, Elk, Ortiz) 25 Incoming freshman (probably fill in those 2nd and 3rd string spots) 10-15 Portal players (1st and 2nd string) Most teams will have 85%+ turnover every three years. One year we'll be cheering for a player, the next he'll be playing for a rival. I'm very interested in seeing how UGA, Bama, etc...build their teams.
From our current high school recruiting after a couple of years, the players equivalent to those you listed will be much farther down the depth chart. Kimber has to be given some leeway for wearing a club for the whole season.
Interesting...6 players, one of whom was a starter at times leaving from a terrible Defense. I understand the need to upgrade the talent of the whole unit, but I would be a bit concerned about players that were starter level at one time not staying....if only to have some experienced depth on the team.
Rashad Torrence is not going pro! Not this year, not next year. His only chance is to have a great SR year and hope the CFL picks him.
I agree to a point, but if some really good talent is available, you gotta do what you gotta do. IMO, BN's first real shot at making some noise will in his third year, anything that facilitates the process of getting there supersedes any shorter-term considerations.
I guess it depends on the position. There are few positions on the field that a true freshman can come in and shine, so counting on those as immediate contributors is a risky business. Perhaps the portal will be kind to UF where it needs to be.
I am going to be glad to have one or no Torrences on the team. I have not seen misidentification of players as much as these two and the arguments that ensue on this board.
I agree, I just think that we have a "grace year" next season to work BN's first two classes into the mix without sacrificing a shot at having a "big year." Beginning with the fourth season and going forward from there, it's going to be time to make it happen on the field - no more mulligans at that point.
I hear ya and agree...I just hope that he can show the fanbase some steady tangible progress so they won't be gathering pitchforks and torches to light. It is really critical to show some progress next year if he doesn't want the noise in the system to ratchet up in intensity. Being forced to play a bunch of true freshmen is a crap-shoot at best. IMO, its imperative to get a substantial amount of key wins out of the portal for 2023.
I think so too. After all, Gator fans aren't exactly known for their great patience or circumspection. Three or four high quality D guys with 2 or 3 years left could fill the bill in terms of short- and longer-term considerations. It is my understanding that there are already several who have declared who could fit in very nicely. I believe Billy will get it figured out one way or another.
I hope so....I just want him to make it to year 4. Coaching for your job in year 3 is very difficult both on the field and it impacts recruiting. I believe that if he makes it to year 4, then the needle will only point up from there.
