Michigan/OSU ratings last weekend were the highest for any regular season game in 11 years. And was the most watched regular season game on Fox in history.

And yet, I keep hearing how college football is dead. It’s as popular as ever.

 

That’s a good one for a playoff spot. The big 10 is clearly the second best conference but that’s their big game. They don’t have many more.

 

They just got a bunch of thirsty ass fans lusting for a semblance of success. Michigan more so then OSU

Well I think that’s a reference to how it’s not what it used to be. Identification with, loyalty, and pride in your school — the stuff that “pageantry” was made of — has given way to money, preserving yourself for NFL big bucks, and now NIL.

Case in point: who would have dreamed even 10 years ago that Big 10 players would choose to skip the beloved Rose Bowl?

So in this context, college football as we once knew it, is dead. Will people still watch it? Sure. But probably at least half the people who watch NFL all day Sunday are tracking the players on their fantasy teams and couldn’t care less who actually wins the game. This is the future of college football as well

 

Yeah, loyalty to team and school are as out of date as two-tone wingtips and Bryl Cream.

 

The future is bright and money is what drives everything whether we like it or not. We weren’t able to watch all of our games in the old days with some not even televised. We went through a period where these games were PPV, and now pretty much everything is available.

Not only that, but we can now watch all of our basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball games, etc. Money drove all that.

As far as the game changing, yes change is inevitable. Just watch an NFL game today. Would the guys that played in the league just 20 years ago recognize the game? All the rule changes to promote offense/scoring and to protect players have really affected the look and feel of the game. Also it has paved the way for a Tom Brady to play at 50 years old.

My point is, some may say college football is dead to them, but if they look objectively, they are as excited about it as ever. The “wait ‘til next year” part of college football (which is every team except one) got an instant boost with the NIL/Portal. A team could quickly go from hopeless to hopeful in one season.

 

Good points. Personally I doubt I’ll ever be as invested in college football as I was in the 80s, 90s, and 00s.

But for sure on being able to watch all our games now. Yes it’s the money that makes that possible. I remember when I was in grad school at Texas A&M a buddy and I hopped in the MG and started driving east until we could find the Florida-Georgia game on regional TV. 250 miles down the road we found a Holiday Inn in Lake Charles, LA that was showing the game in their bar. It was glorious and we drank plenty of Jack as we watched our Gators beating Georgia…… unfortunately that was the “run Lindsey run” game…….

It was a long drive back to College Station that night.

 

I'm probably in the minority but I think I enjoyed sports more when we didn't have unending access to them. Sometimes it meant going to a sports pub to catch florida vs a nobody but most of our games were televised. I'm guilty of checking in the forums and learning about every time a player/recruit sneezes or incessant speculation about players going pro or transferring next year only 1 game into the current season but I was happier before.

Similar to having to go to a music store and buy a new album. The payoff was better when you had to earn it. Everything now is instant access and it has watered it down for me anyway.

Oh one more thing.....get off of my lawn!!!

Some say sports are men's soap opera. Fine if it is casual entertainment and you're not obsessing like a bored housewife buying soap opera star gossip mags in the checkout line.

Unfortunately the internet has turned sports into a Real Housewives franchise.

 

You know when you only get to buy one Atari game or one CD, you play the hell out of that game/CD and you got your money’s worth out of that for sure.

 

I think it’s just a maturity thing. As we grow wiser, we get more efficient with focusing on the things we can control. Having said all that, you and I are still on a Gator forum talking about the decisions of HS kids.

 

Hook those up with a gabardine zoot suit and a loud ass 5" wide necktie and even Ricky Ricardo would be impressed. Oh, and don't forget the Bryl Cream.

I do think we land Lagway but USCw is def making us sweat. I just would be caught off guard if it's anyone but UF or USCw but A&M is in his home state and he's been to games there this year as well. If we're able to land him, I would hope that would peep the interest of another WR or TE this cycle knowing that Lagway is on the way the following year along with Rashada this year
