Breaking: 12 team playoff in '24

Just in time for us to be in it

But a 12-team playoff is a four week affair. Would they start it a week or two after the conference championship games, or start at the usual time and go two weeks later in January?

 

The Rose Bowl tried to bully the CFP, demanded a semi-final game 2 out of 3yrs and to keep their date, looks like they got put in their place.

 

Them California people ain't nuthin' but a bunch tin-horn Yankees with suntans and snotty attitudes.

 

Ugh..12 teams.

Guys sitting out bowl games is bad, wait till people start sitting out regular season games to save themselves for guaranteed playoff games.

Oh well.

 

Does this assume four teams with a first round bye? I don't like that model. The bye is too much of an advantage with such a small field. May as well just have four teams. Oh sure there will be breakthroughs now and then, but winning three games is much harder than winning two. Look at the NFL. There are four weeks of playoffs, so teams w first round bye play three games instead of four. In this 12-team ncaa playoff, teams with byes play two games instead of three. That's a significant difference, imo.

 

First-round games will reportedly be held in the third week of December. Three quarterfinal games will be played on New Year's Day, with a fourth on either New Year's Eve or Jan. 2. The semifinals will follow about one week later, and the championship game will be played at another neutral site the following week.

Three SEC teams minimum every year. Especially with the League expansion.

 

I think the issue was always to preserve the every game counts of the old college football model. Playing for seeding and a bye keeps the focus on winning every game and rewards the teams for the entire season.

Asked what leverage the Rose Bowl had in the process, a person involved in the CFP process simply replied, "They have none."

"The luster of that game goes away [if the Rose doesn't agree]," said one bowl executive outside the CFP system. Maybe the Rose Bowl just has to give in, suck it up. It's just who blinks first."

They had to. There are a number of bowl games that would have gladly stepped up and take their place in the rotation.

 

The only drawback I see is previously games that meant anything were played in decent weather conducive to football. That time of year, outcomes of games will be decided by weather which is lame.

 

Lemme guess, ND gets a bid every year as long as they win at least 8 games.

 

Will regular season be shortened? What about conference championship games? Those will probably mean less if the team knows they are already in the playoffs.

 

12 teams now? Great, just eliminate the bowls though, they serve zero purpose now.

 

Not really, the bye to a top 4 team means a lot and the format is that the 4 highest ranked conference champions get the byes. So if you lose the conference championship then you have to play an extra game if you still make the playoffs.

In my opinion it is going to make conference championship games even more important and increase viewership because if some 4 loss teams pulls off an upset, then some other bubble team will be left home. It could become even more chaotic

 

Clemson, Washington, Utah, Penn St have no business being in a playoff argument. And UT …so that 63 point USCjr ass whopping 2 weeks ago didn’t mean anything? What makes CFB so great is that a loss like that does mean something. As does Clemson & LSU losing last week.

So, 12 teams means 1-4 with byes, 5-12 gives us play-in games to get to 8 teams, then 4, and then 2. I count 4 playoff weeks instead of the current 2. I was a proponent for 8 teams and 3 weeks. This is even more complicated. If we keep the 12-team regular season, a team may end up playing 16 games.

I recognize the conference championship games will be over. That takes up one week. Are they going to play them in sequential weeks or are they going to extend the season well into upper January? Let's assume the play-in games are the first week of December. Then the second round the second week of December. Skip to post-Christmas to finish up around January 1 and then the championship around 9 days later.

Under this scenario, the play-in teams are going to have a difficult time. And I doubt there will be many teams who have many fans in the stadium.

Not sure this is progress.
