Quite a bit. Coach Billy got a season's referendum on who is championship program material and who isn't. Those who are not, for whatever reason, are NOT returning next season. Soon, like by beginning of 2024 season, this team is going to be two deep+ across the offense and defensive boards. That is what wins a National Title, and Billy Napier is going to win one if not more.
Forgot: TE Nick Elksnis —announced intentions to enter transfer portal on November 15 DB Kamar Wilcoxson — announced intentions to enter transfer portal on November 3
I think Toney adjusted the scheme as the season went on but the players just didn't make plays when in position to make them. We got more aggressive in the 2nd half vs UGA till the end of the season but just have no playmakers like THAT defensively
I am disappointed to see Helm leave. In today's pass happy offenses, you can never have too many good cornerbacks.
I assume he gets at least one more year… listened to the GNFP today and while I don’t take anyones analysis as gospel, they mention again how poor tactically we did defensively- that is not on the players. Coaches never went dime defense on 3rd and long, forcing linebackers to cover one of the slot receivers and making it easy on fsu. Also mentioned how not one time did we bring a safety Over the top to help cover tall man Wilson. Compared our opponents defense where those defenses would play a safety Over the top on shorter, basically doubling him on many 3rd and longs and taking him away. While Florida didn’t do this at all to take away Wilson which is the go to place for Travis. in last weeks show pre fsu game they said fsu offense thrives vs 5 man rushes. Some outrageous completion % and average yards per play so stated rushing 5 in this game is sub optimal. Rushing 4 and actually 3 fsu was much worse. Bringing 6 an option as well. Check out how many times we rushed 5- the exact opposite of what the fsu stats showed we should do. so, while we lack play makers, Toney/coaching staff were poor tactically by not playing dime a single time on 3rd and 7 or longer nor give help vs Wilson. That is tactical. The dime defense is pretty basic concept for 3rd and long - should be for UF too since we’ve seen our linebackers struggle covering tight ends, let alone a speedy shifty slot WR. Just bad tactical coaching.
Not to mention Trey Dean being in position, then dropping what looked like a sure pick six. FSU went on to score on that series. 14 pt swing.
How much of that was because of their tempo offense? EDIT: I would add, stopping their run game was number one priority and making Travis beat us with his arm. He made some hero plays to win the game with his legs.
