So I hit up Kevin Brockway on twitter… wondering if a media member has asked about Kowacie’s absence. He said they will “ask next week”. in other words… no media coverage in Portland for a big time, 3-game tourney. The Gainesville Sun should be ashamed of it’s embarrassingly bad basketball coverage.
Like many newspapers The Sun no longer does much coverage of local news, sports or otherwise. We no longer get a Saturday paper (it’s online) and this week we got a small paper on Wednesday and nothing on Thursday. There was no real report about Friday’s football game, and no game report, not even just an AP story about any of the basketball games this weekend. Aside from sports they have completely eliminated the Opinion section—local and national columnists and even letters to the editor
There are few locally owned media outlets anymore. They are revenue generators who provide little information. They complain that they don't have enough subscribers for their print and on line edition. They respond by making their product worse, by cutting budgets and laying off reporters. The reason there are no reports about this weekend is they are too cheap to pay their part time reporters to fly out to Portland to cover it. They're probably too cheap to even pay someone to go to Tally for that matter.
As far as I can tell, they have Brockaway “covering” football and basketball, a woman primarily covering local high school sports, and a columnist. H*** I’d be happy if they just printed UAA summaries of any other sport
The Sun, like many newspapers is imploding from lack of revenue, they recently shut down the opiion sctions so not even doing letters to the editor, one good point remains, Ron Cunningham's monthly column
Its a changing world. We used to need a reporter to tell is what happened. Now we see it as every single game is televised Info like why so and so didnt play becomes almost an afterthought anymore Even ESPN doesnt bother
Sure. I get that. They are all also basketball first schools. Duke football fans feel the same way in this state. The coverage is bad and they play in a major market. Papers are bleeding money. They assume we see the games with out eyes and dont bother informing us on what we cant see. Sad, but true. Btw, I'm not comparing Duke football to Florida basketball as we have a pedigree in hoops that they only dream of in football, just speaking more toward how floundering papers prioritize their money.
I understand. And as a J-school grad who occasionally writes…. I get the dynamics. I just think this set of circumstances dictated someone cover the event. And if not - would it have been hard to request a zoom press conference? I would hope Florida would work to accommodate a greater breadth of coverage.
The Gainesville Sun is being held together by baling wire and bubble gum...no way they pay to send someone to cover in Oregon. Days of the small to medium size local daily are gone forever.
