There's plenty of money. The willingness to spend it is the question.

Hopefully we spend it on our roster and not a bunch of highschool kids.

The brave new world of CFB is looking a little scary at the moment - not to mention expensive. The expensive part speaks for itself. The scary part is the strong possibility of forking out generational wealth to a boatload of teenagers and ending up getting bupkis for your bucks.

High amounts of Tweeners negate any stars advantage our roster "seems" to have when people compare star ratings. Look at Wingo, black, diabate etc as well as retreads that haven't panned out like lingard and Cox. That is a chunk of high rated players that haven't amounted to very much production.

The portal though. Big (smart) money will be buying players from other teams. Gibbs is exhibit number one. A guy with experience who is a known quantity in terms of production and consistency is going to get paid first. Banks will be broken buying them and keeping them.

That is inaccurate. Mullen’s rankings were mostly smoke & mirrors. Nearly every class had 4-6 players that never made it to fall camp for various reasons (mostly academic). And though many were 4* they were generally plan B or C or D guys, because we whiffed pretty regularly on our intended targets.

And none of Mac’s classes ever sniffed the top 3.

If this class holds it will be the best class we’ve signed at least a decade. And it’s not really close.

There is a post on another forum that listed the recruits from mullens classes. It is stunning to see how they really shook out despite the smoke and mirrors of star ratings and class rankings. It's an eye opener.

Transfers that were highly rated when they come from top programs have not been good for us. If they were as good as their hs rating, Georgia, Clemson etc would have kept them on their rosters.

Totally agree, teams will have to buy portal players to win. We will have to buy several this offseason or next year will be just as bad.

Yep, and I fell for it too. It wasn’t until 2021 when it was mostly his players. And watching how they were being used. Lining them up in spots where they had no business playing. A lot square pegs filling round holes last year.

Having overall "better" will overcome a lot of mistakes in college football.
Had this same argument on another platform. Folks point & stars to left of a name as the "end all". Just projections & educated guessing. Especially when you sew said players on the actual field

As long as they spend in relation to what’s being generated, it’ll be fine. No different from any other pro sport.

Throw in the many non-qualifiers that were available largely because everyone knew they were longshots at best, and you get a truer picture of just how shaky some of those DM classes truly were. If you look at the numbers, there is no substantive comparison between those classes and what BN has done to date. If there is any doubt in anyone's mind about it, just consider that we have a Sr. class that is comprised of three actual Sr. starters (Miller, Burney and Dean) plus four RS Sr. whom I won't bother to name because they never did much of anything and won't be back under any circumstances thanks to the great purge. If that's not an indictment of DM's recruiting, I don't know what is. Incidentally, the only non-qualifier from BN's first class has been cleared and will be with the team in the Spring. It is what it is.

Folks, you have to realize we are in a new era. Lots of talk here about the poor talent that Napier "inherited" and that we have to be patient. How long? three years again?
Well, Southern Cal brought in over 20 new players from the Transfer Portal and there they are about to reach the Final Four. If you'll remember, Napier and Riley were hired on more or less the same day- so Riley got out of the gate fast and is going to the Final 4... Gators are 6-6. What does that tell you?

Bringing in diamonds like O’Cyrus & Montrell from smaller programs looking to move up is the real key to the portal machine, imho.

Worse roster because of gaping holes and general lack of depth? Shaky QB play against a much tougher schedule? BN has some growing to do? What's your point?

UGA has zero players on the roster from the portal. Recruiting the players you want and developing them still works.

    Bennett - walk on
McConkey (leading WR) - 3 star who’s only other offer was Chattanooga.

    Jordan Davis - 3 star

That's the rare exception. Even Bama relied on the portal this past offseason.

Jeez, Tilly, do you seriously think Florida's the only team with talent deficiencies? Did we have less talent than Vandy and USF? Personally, I fear the portal and early departures for next year.

I am wondering when the last MNC winning team had a star average under 3.50?
