Post-Game Discussion: FLORIDA at FSU

He has a very quick first couple steps and is very agile. It takes a R a step or two longer to get it going. I love that power run AR had the middle late in the game. He just needs to stay more north and south as a runner. Once they get him running parallel with the line of scrimmage they can string him out

 

Yes as much as you would like to bring him down in those situations, it’s tough when everyone is moving in different directions and momentum is all over the place. To me, “tackling” is an issue when the ball carrier is just running in a predictable straight line and you still can’t bring him down.

 

Wow. I guess I knew about AR's completion drought - hard to believe we got back in the game with those stats.

 

It really shows you how depleted we were at WR, a position that was one of the weakest coming into the season.

 

I'm not saying you can't improve turnover margin. He took over a bad program and made them better.

My point was, in year one, we have been pretty fortunate, good, in regards to turnovers. You can't get any better than first in the conference, so more than likely we will regress next year. I would guess that if you look at just the SEC, there's very few instances where a team was first back to back seasons in turnover margin. If there was a repeat, it would be Bama and look at their historical run.

Ẁe should have went run heavy. They weren't stopping us on the ground. AR has full discretion on RPO's. He showed some emotion and heart this game though i will say that. Just wish that commentator wasn't right from a couple weeks ago when he said AR is a Sourpatch kid. One week he's sweet the next he may give us a sour performance. We were in this game though. Tough performance for the team being out several players. Next year these close losses will be wins. It's part of the process of learning to win.

 

Under Mullen it was luck because we didn’t emphasize and practice it. Under Napier, it’s not luck. Not sure how else to put it.

The reversion to the mean you’re referring to is on a game-by-game basis as the ball bounces differently and the opponents are different. The mean in this case is those rankings above…how you teach attacking the football and how you put players in position to take advantage of turnovers and how you teach ball security and how you drill into the QB to protect the football. That’s your mean as a team. It’s not luck and never will be.

 

Any team isn't going to win many games when the qb is consistently a %55 passer. Two biggest issues inconsistent qb and bad D. Fix those and much better team.

I like this post. I disagree with the part about SOW getting a lot of recruiting momentum. They stormed the field after a close game with a 6 and 6 team that was depleted at key positions with a first year coaching staff. Seems pathetic - can't see that happening at Florida Field. I could be wrong but we want the smart kids that can put all that in perspective.

 

We haven’t covered the slant route all year.

 

Of course the loss is on Napier. He’s the head coach and is ultimately responsible.

I think I figured out what the disconnect is. Some want to get rid of an underperforming asset as if it were a mutual fund. When you’re dealing with organizations and people, there’s a lot more to it. How can you sell family and stability and then go fire everyone?

He attempted to get DT's in the portal who would have been starters had we got them but we lost out on them.

 

I can give 20 examples of turnovers this year being luck vs taught execution.

I already stated two from the Vandy game, do you agree those plays were luck or skill? The int AR threw that bounced off a diving Bowman, and the Marshall muffed punt.

What about the ball Burney batted up twice that Bowers caught, could of should of been an int, instead it goes for a TD?

Last night, 2 picks in defenders hands, both dropped, luck on FSUs side? What about the sack on Travis when he fumbled but then recovered?

What about the play, I think it was Utah that Etienne broke free fumbled, ball bounced right back to him, no turnover?

What about the muffed punts X has had on the year that we recovered, those were skilled plays or we were fortunate to get back?

I have conceded that you can emphasize ball security, and you can also emphasize as a defense attacking the football. However, there is and always will be those plays that either end up in your favor or not. Those plays are luck, they can swing a turnover margin in the positive or negative light over seasons.

 

A win is a win in a rivalry game and I don't think the fanbase cares much about the record or personnel issues of the opponent, I get what you are saying though!

 

Right. Like we scored 38 but still came away saying "boy we need to get an OC or Billy needs to realllly examine his offensive philosophy/time management this off season". I do believe offensively we are a bit "unimaginative" but it would look a lot better if we had a bit more accurate QB and more talent in the pass catching room

 

The world is a swirling Eddie of despair. Listlessly drifting through a void; dark, cold, hopeless... What? I'm sorry, must have drifted off! Must be the debil. "Did the Americans give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?" Hell no!

Yeah, crap, ya have to be positive. Absolutely. The kids balled out. Personnel-wise, we are definitely not as good as many of the teams we played this year, yet we were in most all of the games. And toss in inconsistency. The desire to win, the never-quit attitude was refreshing. That was one unbelievable football game. The best game I saw all year. The part that sucks is we lost it! Next year, we're back in the Swamp. Next year, we should have some game-ready help and a class of up and comer studs. Next year, next year I'll watch from a freaking room filled mouth breathers and walkers. (not really-I hope not!).

Napier is a great human being and a great coach. He is rebuilding the foundation from the ground up. He's smart enough to make the necessary changes. If he doesn't, the towns-people will light the torches and run him from the monsters castle right out of town! The organization, the Gator brand, the recruiting class, the amount of money invested...they're not gonna let this coaching-change slip away without some tweaking. It will be demanded.

Obvious fixes are needed. But last night the defense played lights out. The offense had that long drive and they were able to rest up. Then the defense tired. The offense sputtered, their defense shined at home, and we lost. Losing sucks. But those kids balled-out and won't forget this feeling.

Personally, I'm trying not to lose my mind over this stuff any more. I just hope the obvious can be fixed sooner than later. And, I believe with all my heart that help is on it's way!
