Billy near the bottom of the barrel. What surprises me is that he’s been unable to improve upon the record of a team that was said to have quit on Mullen.
Mullen was getting snarky in the pressers and it was clear that his view of recruiting wasn't consistent with that of top teams in the SEC. Seems to me his heart wasn't really into recruiting/coaching in the NIL era. Time will tell on Napier but with the attrition to the transfer portal and the draft, it's silly to compare this and last year's teams.
True. Though, zero difference makers on this squad at the moment. A few pieces were there from SOS-Mullen. We pretty much got what we could have realistically expected. No one in the program elevated beyond what we thought they were. Upgrade talent and revamp coordinators.
Because as much as I loved him, Mullen (grantham) didnt recruit any dogs. Just big names)star ranking guys. Those guys never quit, because frankly on the defensive side they never started. Billy is stuck with these same dudes. Billy wont improve until he gets his guys. Urban inherited a championship level roster. Sos inherited a sleeping giant as The Bear called it. Zook and Muschamp inherited championship caliber programs. McElwain played the weakest East in SEC history arguably. Benefiting from coaching changes at UGA and UT. This stuff means nothing. Nape is literally rebuilding. Something Mac and Champ never really did. The baffling one in all this is Mullen who really seamed to have turned the program around early on but was too stubborn to build on it.
Not a good stat to predict future success. The two who started the best flamed out misserably. The one who started the worst is arguably our third best coach ever. And our two NC coaches started indistiguishably from those who were inconsistent throughout their tenures. All that being said, there are some serious defficiencies in Billy’s game he needs to address asap.
Mullen quit when the one player he didn't believe in excelled and graduated. He looked over the roster and saw EJ, his star recruit. Mullen wants to play chess but he hates pulling the board out and placing the pieces. Set the board up for him and he'll win. That style works in the MAC, but not in the SEC. You have to have a zeal for recruiting because that's where it is at. You can back 50 years and look at recruiting and the champions always were in the Top 10 year-in and year-out. Since 2000, no team won the title without a Top 5 recruiting class. There are outliers like UCF or Boise St but they are 1 in a decade.
Quit on Mullen, but they fight til the end with Billy. So even with the same record their is heart from them.
Bet you budgeted losing to Vandy and KY and getting nearly blown out by another LSU team in disarray.
Not sure what you’re applying. Billy needs to look inward and make changes but comparing first year coaches when they coached decades apart is foolish. Saban was 7-6 his first year at bama so if we win the bowl game we have the next Saban right? See it doesn’t make sense That being said I think BN needs to Make some changes and losing to vandy is unacceptable no matter what the situation is.
Mullen was decades apart ? After a stirring upset in the opening game, it’s arguably been mostly downhill. I expected us to get better. This is not to suggest that Napier was the wrong hire. But it remains to be seen whether he was the right hire.
I think we might be debating different points here. My point was Comparing Billy to our most successful coaches. Yea mullen had a good first couple years but that didn’t amount to anything.
QB play can make a ton of difference all by itself. Just look at the f$u and USCw QBs and what they meant in their games in the last 2-days alone. The Florida zone runs are "next level" according to analysts. When Florida gets some speedsters at WR I think the "Xs and Os" will work themselves out.
Quality of competition matters. As of today, the Gators played 6 teams that are ranked in the top 20 of the most recent poll with a record of 2-4. This excludes KY that was ranked most of the season and just beat a ranked Louisville team.
I don't think the players that quit, quit on Mullen. I think they quit on themselves. Maybe that didn't change when they stuck around for the first year with Napier.
