We averaged 31.8 and gave up 28.8 that is a razor thin margin. What should the the target offensive production be, obviously more is better? We did this averaging 200+ yds/game and 53% completion %/game. Is 34.8 to 38.8 enough? If so offensive play calling is Lk ess the current issue. Defensively 28.8 points is a lot we did generate T.O.s and that was a net positive. The areas of need on defense are well documented by forum members but just stop with the talent metrics on defense we are sorely lacking in talent and talented experienced depth in the front 7 period. I like the 2 new comers on the edges and S James. If a defense plays 60 snaps your DL should only get 30-40 with minimal drop off as you aren't subbing the the whole unit like a hockey line change. Give coach 2 more recruiting cycles and improved QB consistency and we will be much improved in the above metrics. The team plays hard the entire game currently even when many on the game thread are ready to mail it in much earlier in the game.
Mentioned it in other threads that the in game situational issues and timing of play calls seems to be the problem. Thise Numbers don't reflect those concerns. On the positive side however, those are decent numbers and if that is our floor going forward then some of the all out detractors need to take a breath and look at the potential. We would have won a title or two with this offense and most of Mac/Champs defenses. Just gotta put it all together for a change which is something the last 3 goofs couldn't do.
That's what happens in one score games typically. The miracle 1-score run BN had in Sunbelt won't happen here
Defense wasn't terrible against traditional offensive plays. They held up pretty well, until Travis started improvising. The two scrambles he had were like some Johnny Football type stuff. Their last scoring drive was just a gut punch to a defense that spent the entire 3rd quarter on the field. If the offense puts together one drive in the 3rd we probably are going for the win late instead of the tie.
You make valid observations about optimal in game execution from the staff but as noted above the production doesnt warrant the vitriol some here post. The offensive seasonal production is 47 based on our 12 games and others playing only 11 games to date BUT defense ranks 94 on same scale. Improving by 3 points less moves us up 31 spots and 4 points less gets us to 47. Neither of neither of these improvements is typical of gator defensive performance historically though. Here is where you pick up the 3-4 extra wins in 2023.
I woke up this morning and things went through my spacey brain: We really tried our best ! I think in the fourth quarter AR tried to Will us to victory.I’m good with that ! Our receivers were short of talent and it cost us dearly.but,,, help is coming! Hurt us on formation alignment. Thought the game plan was great. Not sure if Billy tried to out think it in the 3rd quarter but the 4th quarter we resumed our success moving the ball. Their quarterback is a special player and willed them to victory. Hats off . I think after the opening drive TD by FSU , we slowed down the running game (except the QB) If this was Billy’s least talented squad and we played them this close I like our chances going forward. It was a great game in an incredible atmosphere. I usually wake up the next morning after a loss and feel horrible! I’m ok this morning. Really entertaining.. 2 rivals going after it. Lastly , I know the officiating was suspect at times but that job is a bitch ! I know we felt like we got screwed but I’m sure there were calls they felt the same thing . Nobody is out to get the Gators as some of our fans think. Disappointing but I’m ok!
Agreed if your defense hadn't shown it can't be trusted. I'd also do just about anything to keep that unit on the bench. My dog might be a nice dog but I'm not going to trust him to watch my Thanksgiving turkey.
I agree and touch on that in another thread. It's mind boggling how disparate our offense and defenses have been since 2010. Either elite defense with horrific offense or vice versa. This year our offense isn't elite but it certainly functional and would have been enough given our historical norm on defense.
Our edge guys are not fast enough and we could contain him all night. Biggest deciding factor of the game to me.
One thing you can't count on next year is the positive turnover margin. It's really amazing we are only 6-6 forcing as many turnovers as we have. Based on turnovers being largely a luck stat, we could have easily been 4-8 this year, which is scary. With all that being said, UK and Vandy were lost on turnovers. Tonight we missed two big opportunities to intercept Travis and we didn't make the play.
The kick out of bounds after we just tied the game, that's like a walk with 2 outs. It will bite you in the a$$ every single time.
