I'll bet that in terms of percentages, very few gun owners shoot on their properties. Most cities prohibit discharge w/in the limits and there are probably more gun owners in the cities than out on the farms where one can actually legally shoot.
Probably none of that, since the regulations would be new and therefore, by definition, not part of the country's "history and tradition" of firearms regulation.
Reads as if he felt like he was getting bullied quite a bit. Obviously, that’s not a justification at all, but very noteworthy.
That still doesn’t change the fact that many legal gun owners shoot on their own property. I live in an urban center part of the year due to work. I do all of my shooting on my rural property. It’s where my gun range is, and where we hunt. My brothers and father do the same. Your suggestion is to limit the millions of law abiding gun owners sue to a few mentally unstable individuals who in most instances should never have been allowed to buy a gun in the first place.
I didn’t read bullied as much as I read paranoid. He sounds like a roommate I had back in college when he went off his meds..
My suggestion includes banning the public carry of all firearms with limited exceptions and strong penalties for breaking the law. That type of law would arguably be constitutional as it doesn’t discriminate against any particular group of people. The fact that a potential criminal who gets caught in public with a firearm could be going to jail for many years should work to get those guns off the street. There would be exceptions for law enforcement, security personnel, hunters, etc.
My wife defended herself from being carjacked by having a pistol with her. Simply by displaying the gun she scared the carjacker off. He tried it during daylight hours. Would she be here today if she hadn’t been armed? It was back when she was about 19 years old. She’s 68 now. We’ve been married 50 years June 30th this year. I can’t imagine how my life would have turned out if I had lost her that day. What was his intent? Steal car? Kidnapping? Rape? Murder? All or part of the above? I will die or go to prison before I give up any of my guns. Guns that I carried as a city of Tampa police officer, Hillsborough county deputy sheriff, and fire investigator. Guns that my granddad passed down to me. Guns that I bought for my wife to carry to hopefully keep her safe from a$$holes like the guy who tried to carjack her. If you don’t want to own a gun then don’t. Don’t tell me I can’t. And stop with your BS about registration, limits on how many you can own, and why I can’t carry one outside my home. SMDH
Thought I’d add this to the thread. The research is clear: no other country comes close to the U.S. in terms of guns and mass shooters. Why Does the U.S. Have So Many Mass Shootings? Research Is Clear: Guns. (Published 2017)
For every situation like your wife’s, there are probably a 100 gun deaths. As for your last paragraph, I didn’t say you can’t own a gun. I said that assault weapons should be banned. I also didn’t say anything about registration or about any limit on the number of guns you can own. I did say that people shouldn’t be able to have firearms out in public. That’s the best way I can think of to get guns off of the streets. I realize that many people are too selfish to give up a little in order to solve a huge problem, but that’s how it rolls nowadays.
Ok so why should assault style weapons be banned? Hand guns make up far more of the killings in the US. This isn't me arguing it's just a general question Which types of firearms are most commonly used in gun murders in the U.S.? In 2020, handguns were involved in 59% of the 13,620 U.S. gun murders and non-negligent manslaughters for which data is available, according to the FBI. Rifles – the category that includes guns sometimes referred to as “assault weapons” – were involved in 3% of firearm murders. Shotguns were involved in 1%. The remainder of gun homicides and non-negligent manslaughters (36%) involved other kinds of firearms or those classified as “type not stated.” It’s important to note that the FBI’s statistics do not capture the details on all gun murders in the U.S. each year. The FBI’s data is based on information voluntarily submitted by police departments around the country, and not all agencies participate or provide complete information each year.
Assault weapons should be banned to stop mass shootings, including at schools. These shootings are traumatizing our country. In addition, there is no reason for this country to have hundreds of private militias that are armed to the teeth.
So.. the millions of law abiding citizens with AR rifles… who compete with, hunt with, and shoot them legally.. should give up their ownership because mentally I’ll people do bad things with AR 15 rifles. No blame on-the LE, schools, families, ignores the red flags? Just take away the guns? Mass shootings haven’t happened with 9mm pistols? Have any mass shootings happened with shotguns? Every single time we see a school shooting we see warning signs for months if not years. We see someone who should not have a gun.. at all. Those people are going to do damage. 9mm, explosives, shotguns, etc..
Do other countries not have mentally ill people? Why are their mentally ill people less lethal than our own?
Yes, that's my suggestion, but I wouldn't diminish/isolate the issue of gun violence in America to "a few mentally unstable individuals." There are WAY too many a$$holes with guns in America and yes, they are spoiling the gun fun for others, imo.
