TALLAHASSEE — If you’re among the Florida Gators fans who are antsy, if not frustrated, with the team’s performance under first-year coach Billy Napier, Bryan Maggard has a message for you.

“It’s like, just let this guy do his job, right?” Maggard said. “Give him some time, because he knows what he’s doing.”

Maggard knows that better than anyone; he is the Louisiana athletic director who hired Napier, then watched him develop into the best coach his program has ever had.

Maggard sat down with the Tampa Bay Times in the Doak Campbell Stadium press box Saturday, a few hours before his Ragin’ Cajuns’ defeat at Florida State ... and a few hours before Napier’s Gators lost at Vanderbilt to drop to 6-5. But you can tell by the way Maggard gushed about his former employee that the four disappointing quarters in Nashville wouldn’t overshadow their four years of success.

Just let Florida Gators’ Billy Napier do his job, ‘because he knows what he’s doing’

Key to the story is that this interview took place before the Vanderbilt loss.

I want him to do his job and that means being the CEO of the team. Hire a really good qb coach and co OC. He doesn’t need to be calling plays.

One loss ain’t changing that dude’s mind on Napier. We have the perfect coach for us. We all want to win now and win more tomorrow, but that’s not where we are at. Billy isn’t Rain Man, but he can make an honest living as a very successful professional gambler. We just need to enjoy the ride.

Dear Mr. Maggard, it sounds to me like you're saying that CBN's job isn't getting done. And you're blaming UF fans for not letting him do his job.

I'd be interested to hear (or read) your expert opinion about what part(s) of CBN's job aren't getting done and just exactly how UF fans responsible for not letting him do it.

Oh, you meant wait for him to do his job? OK, can you be more specific?

Or, are you just some guy flappin' his yap, only to get egg on his face later the same day?

His job is to win championships. Losing to Vandy isn't in the job description.

Anyone who knows me knows I can be very critical of coaches. Billy Napier is a winner. He is the best recruiter we have had since Meyer, and Meyer did not have to worry about 30 teams that have emerged since our championships under Meyer thst pull top talent now.

He will put together the road map and the personnel to put Florida football back where it belongs. We really need to get behind him and ride the wave!

Who's not letting him do his job? If he was out there on Monday starting to teach Richardson to not throw the ball into the stands on the last play of the game - and a gang of fans stopped him in his path yelling "no Billy, not today you're not!" - then I agree, they shouldn't do that.

It's in all our interests to have CBN succeed. The only way this is going to happen (and it's going to take time) is a total rebuild of the roster and culture.
From my perspective, the complaints about the D and O at this time, shouldn't be overly concerning. It seems already that our D is slowly improving, in spite of how thin we are at LB. Our O has been erratic, however IMO the lack of experience and depth at QB has hurt us this year.

I understand all the complaints about the 12 personnel set, the routes, 'predicatability', and even complaints about the coaching structure and personnel. I believe that what's really important to building championship football is how CBN is going to rectify and update all facets of our team in year 2. We will know a lot more towards the end of next season.
Letting CBN do his job translates to, IMO, being patient and seeing how he addresses all the issues going forward. We need to give him time. We've had 13 years of garbage coaching and football since Meyer, i see many positive signs with CBN.

He’s done everything right except for the Xs and Os. I’m really hoping that can be tweaked and fixed. But I see patterns emerging in clock management, playcalling, and personnel use that appear to be systemic and ingrained. This may simply be who Billy Napier is.

Get everything your saying but as I listed in previous post plenty win in year one. To beat one rival and Vandy are not too much to expect.

I'm assuming he's a very good HC and he will fix the issues in the offseason. None of us know why his play calling and personnel use are what they are. Possibilities are roster, certain position groups, assistant coaches, or IMO the least likely, systemic and ingrained (but that is a possibility).

Muschamp was stubborn to a tee. Mac was also, (Nuss), and Mullen was stubborn and didn't seem to care (TG). I think it's a big mistake to assume that CBN is also. Time will tell but I'm optimistic.

I don't expect anything... 13 years of garbage coaching will do that to me. I'm trying to be open with CBN and understand the challenges we are facing to someday compete with Bama and Georgia. I'm hunting elephants, not house flies.
In one sense, i'm looking forward to see how CBN progresses and how our team improves in the next year or two.
Not making excuses but i just saw on cable this morning that we are missing 5 receivers for FSU.. It's going to be challenging to say the least.
