Mentioned this in another thread. Offense needs to average approximately 35 points per game in order to compete for championships each year. We average 2 more points per year this year than last year, but about 29 per game. Need to improve by about 6 additional points per game in the future to be a more consistent winner. Yes, defensive improvement and special teams improvement will help, but just watch that 35 points per game average if you want to win consistently in P5. Requires you to get off field on defense to give offense more possessions and for special teams to score and not give up momentum killing plays (currently ranked outside top 100 in special teams effectiveness), but measure in terms of average points scored per game. Average 35 and you will compete for division, league and perhaps college football championships. Average below 30 and you need a great D every year to be lucky to get in discussion

With the transfer portal, this means so much less now. Still shocking but likely not a complete disaster.

 

I don’t follow State fans but surely this is a joke. They are nothing as a program. I mean Vandy-esque. They have no chance to compete with their 6 Western brethren. What do they expect out of a coach? Leach has made them a tough out just like Mullen before him. That is their ceiling.

 

No longer matters with the portal. Thousand kids in portal now. 4 and 5 stars that did not get promised playing time. All league kids in lower division looking to step up from farm system. Depth is easy to build if you work at it. However, can’t be lazy recruiters in HS or portal.

Yeah but you also have to look like a attractive landing spot. their play this season did not help, and I wonder just how many portal players they'll actually need to compete and are there enough good ones in the portal avail?

except aTm is a complete disaster right now and Jimbo may not be around long, which most will ponder before signing. Doesn’t mean they won’t sign some at those positions, but doubt they’ll be impact players.

 

Yea, not sure they’d find a better coach, IMO.
