Jack Smith set up infamous meeting in IRS targeting of conservative groups, Congress found.

I'll just leave this here and see what you fine people think about this. Jack Smith is one persistent man.

The special counsel named by the Biden administration to investigate Donald Trump oversaw a Justice Department unit rebuked by the Supreme Court for its prosecution of a prominent Republican and was linked by Congress to the IRS scandal that targeted conservative groups.

Jack Smith, a war crimes prosecutor in The Hague and former chief of the DOJ public integrity section, was named Friday by Attorney General Merrick Garland to take over two investigations of Trump related to Jan. 6 and classified documents found at Mar-a-Lago.

In 2014, the House Oversight Committee concluded that during Smith's earlier stint at DOJ he set up a critical meeting between his department and IRS official Lois Lerner that set in motion the targeting of conservative nonprofits that became one of the signature scandals of the Obama administration.

The Oversight Committee obtained testimony from a DOJ official named Richard Pilger in 2014 that showed Smith set up a meeting with Lerner to discuss more aggressive enforcement of regulations prohibiting tax-exempt groups from engaging in politics in the aftermath of the landmark Citizens United free speech Supreme Court case.

The connection between Jack Smith as the so called IRS scandal is tenuous at best. Additionally, even referring to what happened at the IRS as a scandal as absurd although it's become a core belief among conservatives. First very few conservative organizations were actually denied 501(c)(4) status, the problem was delays in processing their applications and that was attributable largely to the multi-year conservative/Republican campaign to cut the staffing of the IRS. One doesn't have to be a genius to realize that with fewer available employees to review applications it's going to take longer to process them and let's not forget the a number of pro-Democrat organizations were also denied 501(c)(4) status. The reason more conservative organization were affected is because many more applied for 501(c0(4) status. The use of certain phrases to target applications for review although improper was intended to better utilize limited personnel. Said it before if the Republicans really wanted to get to the truth they could have given Lois Lerner immunity. Instead they wanted to perpetuate the myth of conservative targeting. If she testified she almost certainly would have admitted that the screening originated with her or her staff and that it wasn't some kind of plot by senior members of the Obama administration. By the way just a reminder.
Meet the group the IRS actually denied: Democrats!

John Solomon, the former disgraced “journalist” who wrote this was Rudy’s right hand man in Ukraine. A pure political operative. Guy can’t get a job as a journalist so created his own website to essentially shill GOP/Trump talking points. I’m honestly embarrassed for anyone taking him seriously.

What is the subject? The headline seems to indicate that the special prosecutor appointed by Biden was not allowed by the Supreme Court. At least that is how my simple mind tried to make sense of the thread title. Perhaps you could clarify it?

Rick, what's wrong in principle with the bolded/highlighted portion?

If tax exempt groups, like churches, want to engage in politics, fine, but pay your taxes. You against that?

Seems like they targeted a bunch of groups whose names on their face had political connotations.

I meant the portion of the text that I highlighted (in the body of your post), not the headline.

… and it is “the headline” because Solomon is an unethical (former) journalist. The headline does not represent the content of the article. This is why this guy was fired from every journalism job he had. It’s basically 5 degrees of Kevin Bacon to go from “guy set up a meeting” to “guy overturned by Supreme Court”. It’s nonsensical even if we were looking at a guilt by association angle (the sort of logic aimed at rubes).
