Nah the issue is this stuff riles you up. I'm still amazed you somehow went from a libertarian to someone who wants to force your views on what constitutes beauty and what rules should be on a local pageant in New Hampshire.
It should be riling everyone up. Any sense of reality is being shredded. Posters here on the left admit they don't agree that transgenders should be allowed to compete against women but as soon as any barrier or opposition is put in place, the calls of bigotry are heard. which is it? You can't have both.
Lol. You’ve attended one too many vacation Bible school classes. Beauty is beauty, it’s been studied and researched what is actually attractive and what isn’t. Laws of nature and there are few exceptions. But please go on lecturing us on the new libbie rules and what we should believe. Sad.
Face preferences affect a diverse range of critical social outcomes, from mate choices and decisions about platonic relationships to hiring decisions and decisions about social exchange. Our magazines and television screens are not just filled with any faces—they are filled with attractive faces, and both women and men are highly concerned with good looks in a potential partner [1]. Physical appearance is important to humans and certain features appear to be found attractive across individuals and cultures. Facial attractiveness: evolutionary based research
Here's what gets me. The GOP's whole thing is "freedom." DeSantis' entire shtick has been "keep Florida Free" and people are "flocking" to Florida because it's "free." Yet here we have a beauty pageant that chose its own winner based on whatever criteria it decided it wanted. Yes I think its dumb. But how is that not freedom? Ya'll don't want freedom, you want Authoritarianism digusied as freedom for things you approve of or don't.
I get what you’re saying. I really do. Authoritarianism is a bit strong for me. It’s more like pubs pushing back. Of course beauty pageants can have it their own way, but expect blowback from common sense folks. Don’t make more of it then is really there.
And I'll disagree. It's not directed at Dunne, it's not shaming her. It's about an issue. And is it really surprising that someone like VanDeveer who has spent her life working to get women admired for their accomplishments would have a problem with the focus on an athlete's looks? Meanwhile, let me ask again. Who exactly is calling the cross country runner an example of women's progress?
But unfortunately they're doing more than just pushing back. Wasn't it Texas that just passed a law against taking kids to drag shows or something? While I wouldn't take my kids to a drag show, at least at a young age, we're talking authoritarian GOP legislation here. And we see this type of legislation popping up everywhere. It's anti-freedom, and it's way more alarming than a dude winning a beauty pageant.
Kind of similarly, but you'll probably get a kick out of this story from yesterday. We were out at our local farmers market and a girl walked by with bright blue and white hair, crazy dark makeup, very "goth." My 3 year old son goes "Dadda look at her costume" and pointed at her. I'm not sure the girl heard, but hey, kids say the darndest things. I gave him a quick explanation, but about all I'd lay on a 3 year brain.
Yes, my kids point out interesting people at the theme parks. I usually say don’t point and aren’t they interesting. I also always say we don’t make others feel bad for being different. We only do that on anonymous message boards.
How bad do you want to be the best, that you change genders. I think it will be a regretful decision.
Kareem again weighs in with equanimity, at least on the female athlete body image My Take: All athletes—male and female—feel hyper-conscious of their bodies because we are always trying to maximize performance. But sports history is filled with bad ideas about what’s healthy for you and what isn’t. When I was at UCLA, Coach Wooden didn’t like us taking water breaks because he thought drinking water would hurt our playing. We now know the opposite is true. Lots of coaches overtrain athletes in order to toughen them up, but only causing them unnecessary physical injuries—and sometimes death. That’s why it’s crucial for coaches to be aware of the latest scientific developments in sports medicine as well as aware of social issues regarding their players. Lack of awareness is why we have seen so many sports organizations with women athletes allowing their players to be sexually abused for so long. Yes, we need to keep our eyes on the prize. But the prize isn’t winning at any cost, it’s making sure that winning is a meaningful measurement of the athlete’s progress, an indication of her thriving. Not merely performing. Body image has been a tool for oppression of women for so many years that it’s ingrained in our society. Not coincidentally, making women feel insecure about body image is worth billions of dollars in the cosmetics, hair, plastic surgery, and clothes industries. It’s worse that it spills over into sports. But that’s a rant for another day. For now, let’s remember that our athletes—especially those in school—are people in need of guidance who look for that in their coaches. Don’t let them down just because you want a winning team on your resume.
