Historically, though, you are correct. We won’t make a 1:1 trade. Based on all of the actual baddies (some of whom are in Taliban positions of leadership today) we traded for the deserter Bergdahl, we are likely to trade almost whatever Russia wants for her.

Honestly, I don't care what you are, a scholar, musician... as an American, there is not enough money somebody could pay me to enter the Russian Federation anytime soon. It doesn't matter who you are. If you're an American citizen, they WILL make up any reason under the sun to detain you. To quote President Biden during his last 60 Minutes interview: "don't. don't. don't."

 

I don't agree with trading Bout for Griner straight up, but I am not going to crap on her either for having a little oil in her luggage. It was a dumb mistake, but in no way should this be happening to her. It is a human rights abuse. Sadly, human rights abuses happen all the time in this world. We can't fix them all, but I wish we could. Griner deserves our help, but at the same time, we can't make a dumb swap. I wonder if the State Department pleaded with her to leave Russia before she was apprehended. I genuinely feel bad for her. She's a political prisoner.

 

Speaking for self, I feel terrible for her, I agree that she is a political prisoner, and I think her punishment is not consistent with her crime. But, no, I’m not willing to make to an exchange for her unless we are willing to illegally seize Russian citizens for made-up reasons to make that exchange. Any trade has to be fair. The only way to make a fair trade is to arbitrarily kidnap someone they would be willing to trade for.

Which part? I said a couple things there.

 

That we shouldn’t make the trade straight up for Bout. We won’t get a better deal. That is the price. Don’t like it, but posted months ago on this or similar thread that Western democracies that value life make disproportionate trades.

I try to look at this from a postion of hate like most on team MAGA. What would I want if it were Donald Trump?

I’d much rather do what it takes to get him back so we can stash him in a Supermax where he can spend the rest of his days. Same with Britney, her sentence her sentence should be time served and a welcome back.

On a go forward basis she should only go to first worked countries excluding Singapore
