That’s what I’m concerned about. Of course recruits are consumed with playing time. But presumably they want to be a part of an ascendant program.

Well he was able to get all the players and 857 staff members from Gainesville to Nashville safely and on time for the game. Also everyone remembered to bring their uniforms.

Well I have yet to walk into a job anywhere near the scale of operating a premier division 1 football team that was essentially abandoned by the previous staff and lacked investment from the institution as a while for about 2 decades. I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume you haven't either, but who knows. It's the internet after all

You are free to have whatever expectations you want, but someone else not meeting your expectations in year 1 of a rebuild is on you. I'm disappointed with the performance this year, but I'm gonna wait till maybe 1.5 years in to start melting down

There are a couple people being dead serious with their responses to me about expectations, so forgive me if I missed the joke through the sarcasm.

I'm not a football coach but if I a accepted a job in my domain directing a department that had historically been mediocre then they regressed after my entire first year I don't think "you shouldn't have any expectations" would fly.

Good leaders make noticeable improvements to fundamentals in any business, whether it's sales, tech, sports or I'd imagine retail. Im in IT, and while I can't make a team of mediocre software engineers create the next industry defining software I can get them to meet deadlines and make reliable, fundamentally sound products.

If I can't I expect to be looking for a new job pretty quickly.

Yes, The Sylvia Plath diatribe: "If you expect nothing from somebody you are never disappointed." In this philosophy you should have no expectations of others, so you are fine with 0-12. Goals are also "disguised expectations".
Adherents also elevate process goals over outcomes, since process goals are less stressful and are not based upon progress. Expectations are always attached to outcome goals.
So yes, you must have expectations to achieve outcome goals !

Let’s hope recruiting stays improved because there will be lots of negative recruiting pressure applied to our recruits by our rivals between now and early signing day. Losses to Vanderbilt provide lots of opportunities to do so….

From all indications literally every aspect of the organization has improved dramatically. There are obvious concerns about certain staff members, and how he addresses those concerns in the off season will be heavily scrutinized.

The one area he can't do much about in year 1 is player talent and execution, but it's telling that some of the biggest contributors are players that he got here.

Hard to say the team has regressed when there's a pretty good chance they'll end up with the same record while making obvious improvements in some aspects.

Am I frustrated? Hell yes. Am I giving up on Billy? No way. What if Georgia gave up on Kirby after he lost to Vandy in year 1. What if Alabama gave up on saban when he had a losing record in year 1. It takes time. Mullen did a lot of cultural damage in 3 years.

Today's outcome had zero to do with Mullen.
Coach gets a pass on some things.
Today is not one of those days.

Today’s outcome had plenty to do with Mullen..80% of those players were recruited and developed by Mullen (and I use the word ‘recruited’ loosely.)
