Very interesting read: College sports' overlooked gambling issue: Improprieties being ignored as betting soars nationwide “The influence of NIL is a further mind bender. Does that added income make an athlete more likely to gamble or less likely to be influenced because they are better compensated? Now add in new technology, new laws and a new willingness to embrace college gambling.”
I just don't think everybody really has thought of the stupid, stupid stuff a bunch 17-21 year old kids who have been pampered and idolized by those around them in anticipation of a big pay day coming will do with this money many are going to be receive. It will shock everyone the stories that will be eventually told.
It doesn't matter. They are adults and should be able to earn a paycheck just like every other adult. I would suspect, they have been told the consequences that would happen if caught gambling on football games. Out of 130 D1 programs (11050 scholarships) the top 1% might get big NIL deals. 60% of teams wont have any big deals. For every Miami throwing money at 4/5 players there are 30-40 teams that wont have any. I doubt App St or Coastal Carolina has a single player with a 5 figure deal. It really isn't as bad as it seems. Tx A&M giving linemen 30 grand. Do the math. approx 5 grand in taxes. 25,000 The players are around 40 weeks out of a school yr and give 30 hrs a week to football. Breaks down to 20 bucks an hour.
I appreciate your comment, "they are adults",....do you have kids or had kids that age? Where we initially disagree is they might be legally adults in many locations, doesn't make them any smarter just because they are legally called adults at 17-21. At that age my perspective on money was quite different than now. My reference to stupid stuff doesn't initially include gambling. The actual # of kids and/or adults who are actually getting paid something will be about as widely known as the people who have lost their shirt with this FTX blow-up on crypto, it just won't be public info. I think more will get paid than you think. Speaking of adults, have your read about the one who had his entire signing bonus with his NFL team paid in crypto? Did he lose it all? Sounds like your belittling kids getting paid "just" $30,000, chump change, maybe it's not enough to be foolish with but with mean annual income in the US being between $55-60 some of these kids are going to get paid half to who knows how much more than their parents make. You don't think they will feel loaded, flush? I'm not against kids getting paid something (many already are getting stipends of $3-5,000 annually) to go along with free school/room/board. As is the case, there will be so many paid so much before they've ever done anything to earn it. I played when we got $25 per month for laundry so I have a little idea of the world these kids live in. And yes, it's a hard brutal game and the schools own these kids, but for now it's still called a game.
I think it's great they are getting paid. I want everyone of them to milk it for every penny that the idiots (donors) are willing to give them. I'm not belittling them at all. What I'm saying is it's not as much as its being made out to be. As far as earning it, the top players in the country have dedicated their entire youth to honing their skills. Winning games, districts, regionals and state championships. Playing through injury. Some severe(ACL). They have more than earned it. I have stated this before. In my 20 plus yrs in my profession I have worked with HS, college and professional players. I have heard the stories and seen the scars. I have helped put them back together and keep them on the field. They have earned it. The scholarship is different. The school is paying the player(education, etc) in return of playing football. NIL is a job(technically) from a 3rd party. No different than working over the summer. The smart ones will save and invest, others will blow it. No different than any other person who works.
You are missing the point. They will now have a lot more money with which to gamble. That’s just one problem. Are online sports books, etc., allowed to pay NIL money directly to the players? If not, why not? Think of the ramifications of that.
What ramifications? It's simple get caught gambling, lose your schollie. I don't know if they are or not. But I would think it is not allowed like in the pros. I don't have a problem if a sports book wants to pay a player NIL. Now if that book tries to rig a game, that is fraud and both the book and player should be charged.
Let's assume the math is correct. Let's not forget about the "value" they get from free (sometimes rather luxurious) housing, free food, free medical care, free tutoring....and I'm not even going to bother talking about the value of the education (since not all take advantage of the value they could get). My big issue with NIL (not that it matters) is 1) the use of it as a recruiting inducement...which is related to 2) just about none of them would be making any of this money if they were not playing a high profile sport at a high profile school (in other words, they have athletic talent, but their NIL money is primarily based on notoriety of playing X sport for X school). But hey, society values entertainment over most anything else, it seems.
As for gambling, I can speak with some authority in saying that while currently the prohibition on gambling is a "bedrock principle" of the NCAA, that might be changing (not talking about betting on or against your own team) going forward. Other issues are starting to take precedence over gambling. Further, gambling infractions are often hard to discover. Usually it's someone else reporting you and that can include a bookie who has been stiffed. And historically there's not been a whole lot of "reward" for an S-A who has been cooperative in the investigation and candid. So it will be interesting. If some kid pisses away his/her NLI money on gambling, so be it. Life lesson.
Nothing is free. They are exchanging time, effort, everyday injuries and possible career ending injury for the things you say are free. People keep saying the schollie is free. If it were, they wouldn't have to play football for all the free stuff. So what if its entertainment? All kinds of entertainers get paid. Actors, comedians, jugglers etc... I get the inducement angle. Definitely a gray area. But if a player, actually anybody, can get someone to pay them money for their skill and time. More power to them.
They get NIL money from a sports book. And you see no ramifications? No wonder you have bugs bunny as your avatar
