Of course you said that. You had to preempt people rolling their eyes at such low expectations. Pence is going to run against Trump. He has to call him out. He's far from the only Republican who has said unkind things about Trump in the past few days. Pence enabled the rise of Trump, sucked up to him throughout his presidency, and continued sucking up to him after January 6th. You will, I have no doubt, note that Pence refused Trump's planned coup. And he deserves credit for that. But at the same time, I'd expect any person to do their constitutional and patriotic duty in that situation, so it's not a high bar to surmount that he did. Pence could have made a difference if he spoke out against Trump during the second impeachment. He didn't. Too little, too late.
He.. did.. speak.. up... He went after him on Jan 6. He questions the constitutional legalities of efforts to remove Trump. That isnt the same as outright support.
So intent was Pence on being Trump’s loyal second-in-command — and potential successor — that he asked confidants if there were ways he could accede to Trump’s demands and avoid certifying the results of the election on Jan. 6. In late December, the authors reveal, Pence called Dan Quayle, a former vice president and fellow Indiana Republican, for advice. Quayle was adamant, according to the authors. “Mike, you have no flexibility on this. None. Zero. Forget it. Put it away,” he said. But Pence pressed him, the authors write, asking if there were any grounds to pause the certification because of ongoing legal challenges. Quayle was unmoved, and Pence ultimately agreed, according to the book. 'Peril,' by Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, reports Gen. Mark A. Milley called a Chinese general twice to pledge the U.S. wouldn’t strike - The Washington Post
Okay. What did he say publicly that day? That's the same party-line excuse Republicans gave to justify refusing to take a stand. It's nonsense. Spineless sycophancy.
Those who voted for Trump in 2016 don’t really understand words like class and grace. If they did, they would have never voted for Trump in the first place. Trump was found guilty of discrimination before 2016; Trump settled lawsuits of sexual misconduct before 2016; heck Trump was caught on tape say “grab them by the ...” during the 2016 campaign. Did any of those multiple examples of his lack of class or grace stop them from voting for him? Of course not! Isn't it ironic that Republicans never admire their former Presidential leaders. Bush Sr? Bush? Heck even Regan isn’t the “gold standard” anymore to them. They ignored Trump’s fascism in 2016, now they want to discard him like they’ve done with their past presidents. The only problem is, he won’t go away so nicely. Republicans should have shown some class and grace in 2016; it might of helped avoid the issue they find themselves stuck in now...
The bar is sooooo low at this point. Now, after most MAGA candidates get clobbered almost 2 years later and republicans are speaking out against Trump, now he speaks out with some conviction. Previously he characterized it as a difference of opinion. His family was in danger yet he kept quiet. Trump calls McConnell’s wife racist slurs and he keeps quiet. Republicans have been so Stockholm syndromed it will be a while before they recover, if ever.
It's hard to forgive and forget years of cringe-inducing sycophancy just because Pence has deigned to bring a minimum of truth to a corrupt power.
By publicly certifying the results? Quite a bit, I would say. Lol. No it isnt. There were legit questions in that regard, regardless our feelings. And recall, I supported impeachment and rooted for it.
Do you feel that way about Biden's racial history? I mean these guys all do things wrong, and sometimes they change.
He didnt go public, but was far from quiet. Its why Trump went after him on Jan 6 and tried to get the mob to go after him. He wasn't quiet where it mattered. On the job.
My guess is the party will be burnt down and rebuilt from the ground up. Boy if there was a fiscally Conservative Party that believed that private matters were private.
It’s tiresome and predictable. It’s worse than some who come in here and drop libbie this, libbie that. I mean right?
He wasnt pitching his memoir on Jan 6th when it mattered. Ask Pelosi what she thinks of Pence that day. She knows he stood up. Thus the concern on her face in the phone conversation between the two.
Anyone who aided and abetted the biggest political nightmare of my life gets no slack. I don't even care if he's honestly changed, he's a reminder of a profoundly painful time in our history, and he, like Trump, should just bow the hell out.
