I agree with a lot of the sentiments on this thread. If the only reason we are voting for a candidate is that they can win, our actions are devoid of principles. Trump’s popularity should be considered irrelevant to whether he is a good candidate.

 

I don’t think that’s fair. None of us knew 6 years ago the amount of information we know today. Not even close. Even if you were someone who closely followed Trump then, you would not have known what you know today.

R's are laughably trying to scapegoat Trump as if NOW is how he's crossed some line. It's shallow and obvious. Putting all the chips into Desantis doesn't change anything from a policy standpoint. Zero chance Trump turns down campaign contributions and adulation from crowds. He's riding a bus all the way to November '24 and will pull off a big chunk of the crazy 32%.

Maybe this scenario will get us back to a true and rational conservative counter weight by '26.

There was about six billion metric tons of info that Trump was a malignant narcissist and likely a sociopath before he ever ran. The narrative was "we know he's ten pounds of crap in a five pound bag but he'll normalize when he becomes president and take the job seriously." Instead he spent his time tweeting, sleeping late, golfing, and watching Fox News.

"I didn't know Trump was such a train wreck" is akin to "I didn't know smoking was bad for me.". You knew, you just chose to ignore it

 

Nothing can stop Trump from running except a conviction. If you ask me the dems should suspend the investigations and let him and Desantis eat each other. If they prosecute him successfully the GOP will get to use him as a martyr while secretly getting what they really want - something to involuntary move him out of the way

99.999% of people didn’t know anything more about Trump in 2015 other than he was a billionaire playboy from NY and hosted The Apprentice. He had a celebrity persona, for the most part. Sure, to the raving liberal lunatics who live and breathe politics, perhaps they knew more than that about Trump, but even though know way more now than they did in 2015. There may have been six billion metric tons of info that 00.0001% of the population actually knew about.

Just by reading this forum the past couple of months, most posters here who sympathize with the GOP have routinely ridiculed and maligned Trump, so it’s not as if there is this big change of heart here. In fact, I can’t remember one single post here in the past couple of months of somebody actually saying they’ll vote again for Trump.

 

Just during the campaign in 2016…he was accused by nearly two dozen women of sexual assault, he attacked a gold star dad, mocked POWs, threatened to pick up his political opponent, hinted that Ted Cruz’s dad was the zodiac killer, refused to reaper hisntwx drums (first nominee in modern history), praised Putin, retweeted white supremacy stuff on top of all three other verbal diarrhea that made it to that platform, on and on and on.
Who he was was always clear for anyone with two open eyes and ears. And many of us tried in vain to get folks to see it here. His supporters didn’t want to acknowledge it for what it was because they loved how strong and defiant he was. Now that those traits aren’t getting him anywhere it’s much easier for many on the right to finally accept what should have been clear 6 years ago. He’s done deep damage to this country’s democratic institutions in that time.
So again, better late than never.

LOL, all those things may have been true in 2016, but it doesn’t change the fact that there is way more information available about Donald Trump in November 2022 than there was in 2016. And again, where are the Trump supporters here? I never see pro-Trump stuff on this forum.

I can't answer for others, but I hope Trump doesn't run. I don't think he could win. He did great for our country and the republican party, but I wouldn't hesitate for second if he won the nomination to throw my support for him. I hope DeSantis doesn't run either. I would like to see Mike Pompeo run

 

As far as I'm concerned, Trump is a double agent. The damage he has now done to any hope of stopping the madness and economic ruin of the past two years for the sake of his own ego is as real as if George Soros paid him to do it.
