Okay, I am going to "go there." I think too many people don't get the maturity thing, at least IMO. I use Manning and Tim Duncan in basketball as THE examples. What I believe as fact is that these guys WERE mature, and so they saw the value in staying at the college level for as long as they could. And yes, it did not hurt that Peyton came from a well-off family. But my point is, if you have certain proclivities, you can then put your future on a sort of hold to gain an even better chance for success. What I see is a society that values instant gratification and not a strategy for ultimate success. A kind of contrast to me, and it was pretty long ago in the way we think today, was Jason Campbell, who had new concepts thrown at him every year in college. Did it hurt his stats or wins? Most likely (if it remained the same his entire career) but he kept rising to the occasion and had a damn good attitude. Talk about a mentor to the newbies. If AR can find his inner strength, and not a bunch of "homies" who "obviously know better", I think he would understand that his time in college is valuable and not just a brief stop to...whatever we can imagine. But that is a damn rare commodity these days.
What's the conversion, then? The guy basically didn't throw a pick against 30 TDs. That doesn't happen at FBS either. Carson Wentz threw 14 of them at the same school, for reference. Also got drafted in the first round. That's a pretty good comparison.
But if I’m a gm, I’m not risking a number one. Another season of playing and learning will show a lot more of what he is capable of.
Apparently he's still hyped up anyway. My point is if he gets drafted in the 1st round I hope it's by someone who understands how much work he needs. Otherwise it could be a short career. I want him to get paid, but longer career = more money.
I guess it comes down to whether he can improve his stock with another year of college ball. Shane seems to think he won’t be able to and that he should develop as an NFL backup and make that money. If he decides to go pro, I can see him slipping like another “developmental QB,” Malik Willis.
the film doesn't lie, no qb is perfect -- but he misses throws and reads all the time. Throws to the wrong spot on the field, doesn't lead the receiver etc. Throws under the DB vs over the top etc. His reads and progressions just aren't there, unless its a progression read where all 3 primary receivers are in the same field of view. Struggles when he turns is back to the field on some handoffs. For so many great QBS, it seemed like the game slowed down for them, I don't see that with him. I think his plays are made because of athletic ability. I don't know maybe he is the hardest working guy in the locker room etc, maybe our playcalling puts him behind the sticks and too many 3rd and longs, where we can't max protect long enough. But sometimes, we are in those 3rd and longs, because he missed the read on 1st down etc.
Just to play the flip side, what happens if he comes back and doesn't improve or gets worse and his draft status goes way down? What happens if he comes back and gets a season ending or even career ending injury? There are so many unknowns that coming back isn't always the best option even though us fans want to see it happen.
That's always the case for any athlete. By that definition all athletes should go pro as soon as they can, and obviously that would be a huge mistake for most. Far better to develop- esp if he is not ready. And he is not. A good game vs an injury and flu depleted mediocre team doesn't mean he is ready. AR couldn't do anything vs Kentucky. Kentucky! They destroyed him. Everyone saying AR is ready should watch that tape. News flash- the NFL is far tougher than Kentucky. AR needs to come back and prove he can beat Kentucky before going anywhere. Hopefully someone wise can give him that counsel.

I know AR aint perfect. He's definitely got some learning to do. A more steady QB might have made a difference in a few games this year. But damn..when he's on his game, there is no one like him. He is without a doubt, the most physically gifted QB that ever worn a gator uniform. He misses reads, but his good plays are spectacular. That's why, even with his flaws, i would love to see him come back next year. You only get a guy like him once a generation. I'll take my lumps with AR.
I’d take the gay rap 1st rd money without a second thought but for his success he needs another year. I’d never use a first round pick on potential.
Here's the part that bothers me a bit. Denny Thompson trains AR in the off-season, right? Does Denny have any input into AR's decisions? On and off the field? I don't know the answer to that, but I'd really rather no external sources be in our QB's ear.
Not saying he should go, but that was what his 2nd game as a starter? Don't you think he'd play KY much better now that he has some experience under his belt?
I don't know much about gay rap, but ... The way I see it, if you're a 1st round projected pick, here's the decision tree: Are you NFL ready today ---> Yes, enter draft ---> No ---> Will you be in a year?: ------------> Yes, enter draft ------------> No ---> Will you be ready in 2-3 years? ---------------------> Yes, strongly consider entering draft ---------------------> No, see if another year in college as a starter gets you there There's risk and reward involved and it's impossible to know, but 1st round pick = 1st round expectations = potentially getting labeled "bust" quicker = not in the NFL
Hes closer to a top 10 pick than he is not being a first rounder. He’s an athletic freak, reads the field well, and has great accuracy on NFL throws. His weakness is he overlooks check downs and throws it too hard. I think it comes down to talking to CBN and seeing what type of O he wants to run. If it’s heavy bunch sets with 2 TEs and no coverage beaters… then he should definitely go.
