Talk about willful cluelessness. Midterms are almost always brutal on party of presidency. Biden has low approval rating. High inflation. Widespread dissatisfaction in economic issues. In spite of all that it was basically a push. The most coherent narrative I have heard is abortion heavily motivated younger voters, as demonstrated by the heavy D+ margins in 21-29, and secondarily there was some fatigue towards some of the Trump favoring election fraud nutjobs / poor candidate quality. You can’t look at the success of the abortion protection issues in places like KY and conclude it was a meh issue. It doesn’t have to be the most important issue to everybody, but it could be the most important issue among voters who may not otherwise come out and some swing voters.
Every midterm isnt a bloodbath. Regardless, when you guys want to address what I actually said in this thread about the "IF" part of the conversation let me know
This is true. Some real. Some manufactured. But true. By manufactured i mean, we had a (desperate...losing) candidate here that claimed that the republican candidate would criminalize all abortion. That was patently false. That forced the Republican into defending the truth. He ended up winning. It would be interesting to see what the abortion debate would look like if everyone was honest. Sensationalistic scare tactics were the MO for some. Meanwhile we had republican commercials basically saying dems wanted to slaughter toddlers in the streets. Also false of course. There is no honest debate in America anymore. Dems know that reasonable abortion restriction doesnt resonate like they thought, or else they would not have to resort to the lies about rape and incest that some did. Meanwhile some republicans did the same by going to extremes and giving every pro lifer a bad name in the process. Abortion is not an honest debate in this country. Some on this board calling pro-lifers the Taliban and some calling 16 year old girls murderers. Who knows how America would vote in a truly honest campaign?
This one was supposed to be. But thanks to the abortion issue and so many GOP nominees being lunatics, it wasn't. And that is why the right-wing pundits are throwing temper tantrums now. And granted, you put an 'if' in one of your posts, so I probably shouldn't have singled that one out as 'wrong'. But for your other post that I singled out you were flat out wrong. Your denial of abortion as an important issue in this election does not make it so.
Abortion, and, older people don't want to hear this: student debt. I think the narrative around student debt was entirely wrong. I think that the people that were so angry and resentful about it that were older weren't going to vote for Democrats anyways. And those that just grumbled about it, didn't change their votes. Meanwhile, just the nod of concern about their economic circumstances was a major thing for younger people.
I think if the right had embraced at least a plan for student debt that was in the ballpark of Biden's it would jave been huge. It eould have shown younger moderate types that the party hears them. That would have been viewed as liberal by the Maga faction and God forbid you ever do anything that isnt toeing the line to that group. Regardless. This is good news for Trump haters on the right. A landslide victory for him (perception wise) would have solidified him. This casts doubt and will force candidates and voters to examine what to do with him going forward.
No, just 2018, 2014, 2010, 2006, and 1994 (since Clinton came into office). 1998 (in the midst of a massive economic boom and an unpopular impeachment effort) and 2002 (post-9/11 boost to Bush) were the previous exceptions. Do you think the economy is doing well enough to avoid the "bloodbath" or is there some event that is rallying people to the President to the extent of 9/11 to explain this one?
Honestly, i just think we are so perfectly divided now. Not sure any extreme swings will happen in the near future.
Outside of the MAGA lunatics, Mocking a victim of a stroke as he (very) publicly recovers probably played about as well to the overall electorate as “crudités”.
Republicans should have had the courage to impeach and remove him. Now they are stuck with him. And they didn't because they didn't want to take on their own base and tell them the truth.
accountability is just propaganda for the sheep. They still have a chance...they could keep the 1/6 comm intact. gee, I wonder what they'll do.
