The difference between the heavy hitters in recruiting THEN vs NOW is … ‘then’ they would hook you up with a nice tricked out vehicle, a pretty sweet apartment, hook mom or dad up with a decent job and maybe a 50k bag on the side if you were worth it … ‘now’, I have an ‘investor’ that is willing to cough up $5 mil for 4 years, sign up and it’s yours.

Different ball game and Bama & UGA are still trying to figure it out. They just have t results that carry a different amount of weight than the rest of us. Plus, they were REALLY good at the way.

 

It sure feels like our chance of winning another championship is dependent upon Hugh's disposable income.

Bama and Georgia aren’t figuring out anything. They are just doing as they were before at much larger stakes. The only thing the are figuring is how much it’s now going to cost and are the boosters willing to pay enough to keep the top spot in recruiting.. The A&M and Miami method aren’t looking so good right now. The top rosters may be the thing to buy through the portal just like nfl freeagency with no cap just like mlb.

 

I agree. Wisconsin, Nebraska, USF, AUB and more will look at him as a HC. However, I think he would become a better coach if he did spend 2-3 years under Saban, so to understand structure and more.

 

I’ve always believed that to be the case so I got over that a long time ago.. It’s minor league of nfl without caps or draft. Just a free for all of stacking talent. Much closer to mlb where you can be more successful at buying championships. It’s no accident that the Yankees have been to more World Series than anyone by far. They simply have always had more cash.

 

I think he doesn’t have any interest in working as hard as Saban. I think he’s a much better football mind than Saban will ever be but Saban is the ultimate ceo. He works his ass off, demands effort from his coaches and players, and will get the best coaches money can by as soon as this season is over.

 

He didn't learn anything working under another relentless HoF college football coach at UF, he won't under Saban either. He's always the smartest (and laziest) coach in the room.

 

Bingo. Coached under Meyer for like 5-6 years then was the head man at a bottom tier SEC school for almost a decade before becoming our HC and still blundered it away after a historic start because he was too arrogant and stubborn.

 

The knock on Mullen was that he is arrogant, hard to work with and college kids don't relate to him. But, there's no denying he's an offensive genius and legit QB whisperer. Kind of reminded me of the guy who Florida Field got named after.

Unfortunately for Mullen, college football is different now than it was in the 90's. Football programs are BIG business and need to be run like billion dollar companies and recruiting is the lifeblood of the program. You can no longer be an average recruiter and a great coach and expect to succeed. You've got to be both and if you're not, your program dies.

 

If it makes you feel any better it’s up to your income as well

 

They are not coughing up the kind of money Miami & TAM have been throwing around

Geez...I never thought of that. So you're saying I can contribute my income too? I had no idea.

My point is that b/c Hugh has a lot of money and the willingness to spend it on Gator sports, it feels like he (and other wealthy alum) will determine if we win another championship.

 

Yep, as will you. All championships of the last 20 years have been determined this way

 

Maybe for the established guys as it should be, can’t have superstars hitting the portal.
