SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Forty-two percent of America’s young-but-cynical Generation Z are dealing with a mental health condition, a new survey finds. A range of these issues were largely identified during the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The analysis by Harmony Healthcare IT suggests tens of millions of Gen Z young adults started dealing with a mental health problem in the months immediately following the start of the global pandemic in March 2020. The Indiana-based data management company’s survey highlights a staggering percentage of young adults diagnosed with anxiety, depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during the pandemic.

That's a pretty bold conclusion to attribute so much to the pandemic. I'm sure it has nothing to do with social media and cultural changes...

Or the fact that they are inheriting a world with catastrophic climate change, economic upheaval and a reawakening of fascism

Or the fact that advances in mental healthcare and it's acceptance mean that people get help for mental health conditions rather than just suffering with them or trying to self medicate them away.

I wish we could ban FB, ticktock and all the rest, at least for anyone younger than 18.

I see so many affected youth right now it's sad. I know every generation worries for the next and claims life was better back when, but narcissism seems to be at an all time high and much of it seems like a facade. I have young family members that are great athletes or gorgeous people and they can never be truly happy because they live their lives on social media or see others doing so. I've never seen so many High schoolers with lip injections, nose jobs or beast augmentations. It's sad.

They are being raised coddled, entitled and to be victims. It is no surprise that the slightest bit of adversity in their lives, they break so easily.

They could just do like the older generations and self medicate with alcohol and nicotine while refusing to talk about their mental health. We all had people in our families who struggled with mental health, but it used to be taboo to talk about it, especially for men.

It would be interesting to see these numbers from other advanced countries. I don't know the age group(s), but South Korea has a very high rate of suicide, for example. I think a lot of it may relate to economic pressures and expectations. Boys/men are much more likely to commit suicide. There could be biological reasons for that, but I have to think part of it is that men talking about their emotions has not been considered masculine. Lincoln suffered greatly from lifelong depression, and I doubt he would have been elected if the public had known the extent of it.

Unfortunately some have come to expect (even outside of gen z) to experience no emotional distress at all. That is completely unrealistic.

Both of my kids had a disabling mental condition that took years to cure. It’s called “teenager”. I still have one battling through it bravely.

I have a hard time believing that 42 percent have even been evaluated, much less diagnosed with mental health issues.

Thank you for the reminder. Indeed hope - and love- is known to spring eternal....

I should also remember that in another language the word for charity also means justice intended to improve the world.

Yes, and I know that's what the survey reported. As I said, I don't believe it. That doesn't mean I'm right.
