Most Evangelicals today believe in the penal substitution theory, that Jesus was the substitute for the sacrifice Satan requires for the believer to be redeemed from the fires of hell after death. According to doctrines taught by churches teaching this doctrine, all a person must do to be saved from the eternal punishing flames of hell, is to repent of their sin, believe it and other associated tenets of belief like the virgin birth. It is a doctrine of punishment, with Jesus being the substituted and punished sacrifice to pay the price Satan exacted on mankind from Adam and Eve's sin in the Garden of Eden. Catholics, along with other Christian sects and denominations teach other atonement theories, among them - ransom, satisfaction, Christus Victor, Governmental, Scapegoat - each stressing other aspects of redemption. The theories have subtle distinctions that change how and what one believes and conducts his or her life.

When Evangelicals attempt to evangelize and convert a non believer to faith, they will emphasize how mere believing and accepting Jesus changes one's eternal destiny. You have probably read displays of that on this forum from some GC members who post here. If you sin, ask for forgiveness and all is once again right with God with an assured place in heaven after your death. Too many of them who believe this regard it as a license to do whatever they damn well please, with no regard for what Jesus taught. There is little emphasis on how following the teachings of the Christ will better mankind. Teachings like it is better to give than receive, to treat other people the way you yourself wish to be treated. As you judge, so will you be judged.

Thanks. I stand corrected. The percentages depend upon how respondents identify. I’ve no idea why some identify as evangelical, though Lacuna has posted an analysis. In any event, it does seem north of 80% of evangelicals support Trump, which is for me incomprehensible.

 

It doesn't make any sense at all. But these people have combined their Christianity and their right-wing politics into something where the 2 things can't be separated. It's almost like a new religion. It's certainly not true Christianity any more.

Wow. You have nailed it here. My recollection of suffering through services as a child was “he who believeth and be baptized shall be saved”, or something like that. Your explanation of “Jesus died for our sins” provides some context for that assertion.

Your subsequent assessment of those who behave atrociously yet claim to be practicing Christians makes sense. Your observations of so many Christians who really don’t seem to emphasize the actual and spirit of Christ teachings are spot on also.

I watched the ad. If he is open about his faith, I have no issue with him believing he is serving God in his work. None whatsoever. And I say that as someone who doesn't have a faith.

What I might have an issue with if I was Florida-resident is how his slogan is 'Never stop fighting for freedom'. Precisely, what "freedoms" does America not presently have? Well, other than abortion - we saw that one in the news...

That's a bit like me fighting for ...a toothbrush. When I've one in the bathroom, upstairs.
I guess 'freedom' polled well with the focus groups? It's just more populist bluster.
