I had never spoke in code before but a while back my daughter in law told me that her family used to talk in code when they were in public and discussing things that aren't talked about in public.

So tonight I took the family, the wife, 2 of my sons 3 of my daughter in laws and 8 grandchildren to Golden Coral for dinner. I was telling them about a store manager I had gotten into an argument with earlier in the day who was very fowl mouthed right there in the store. We were in a crowded restaurant of mixed ethnic backgrounds so I didnt want to mention the lady I had argued with was black.

My daughter in law asked if she was Canadian. I remembered our conversation about speaking in code and distinctly remembered Canadian meant a black person. I answered yes she was very Canadian, lol my first time speaking in code worked like a charm.

Is this a way of being racist without other people knowing you’re racist? If I’m misinterpreting it, please help me understand the purpose.

Why did her color matter in the context of the conversation?

What word does your family use at home?

Now I know why my parents always called me the Canadian sheep of our family whenever we were in public.

But the surprising thing here is that people still eat at Golden Corral.

What does it mean for someone to be “very” Canadian?

I don't think that's what he meant, more like being able to tell the story without offending anybody next to him at the restaurant. Sounds like he was being respectful of others, but I could be wrong

I'm glad it worked out for you. But you were lucky no Canadians overheard. Could have been an ugly food fight with the buffet right there and all.

There are times when mentioning the race of someone adds context to the story. I can understand why someone may be uncomfortable mentioning the race, even when it’s relevant to the story, because someone overhearing it may interpret it the wrong way. He didn’t give much detail in his post other than the manager was foul mouthed. It would have been helpful to know why the race of the manager helped to explain the conflict.

I feel like something should be code for Golden Corral.

Me - I took my wife to Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse for our anniversary

Skeptical friend - Is that code for Golden Corral?

I have been very critical of 51 here over the years. No doubt about that. But I have to defend him here:

    I like Golden Corral

Well, besides throwing it, what else is poultine good for? Gotta get rid of it somehow. A throw and a wash and we're done.

I’m not sure if I’ve even seen one in the last 20 years. I liked it fine as a kid.
