Typical social media post: the angst and the righteous indignation with not one example of what “Ohio” is doing to make it difficult for young people. Maybe their parents said “Hey, you’re 22 now, it’s time to get a job or finish school”. The horror. The horror.

I realize this is going to sound crazy, but maybe the politics of the candidate should be considered of secondary or tertiary importance behinds things like how good of a person or leader is the candidate.

Most what is considered right vs left political differences boil down to philosophical or moral foundations that, by definition, cannot have logical justifications. No equation can prove that we should start our analysis from the precept that the individual is more important than the society or that free speech is more important than the sanctity of the flag. So in the end, our preferences on these matters, strongly held as they are, boil down to some very arbitrary basal criteria.

However, I think most of us can often agree on basic norms, like stealing and lying is wrong and helping others is good.

Not that such is the case here, but I don't know why it should be that we overwhelmingly choose politics over decency.

Very eloquently written about his potential character and I didn't say he wasn't a decent person; that said, this is about politics, and I say vote for a person who will vote for your view on matters, not rubber stamp every proposal from the other side. That is what I think he would do, so I wouldn't vote for him, nuff said.

Cranky old man with a mad memory or little self-discipline. You aren’t supposed to respond to me, but you couldn’t help yourself. You took the bait. Ha!

I understand your view, as it is the way it’s done. But I do think that our political leanings end up having a rather arbitrary origin. If so, it isn’t easy to explain why we should value right-left voting tendencies over other candidate attributes. Even though it does sound crazy to our ears.

I have another theory on why it is happening more now. Republicans used to have more differing opinions on things, but began getting their butts beat on every issue when the Dems were always in lock step with their leaders. McCain was one example, Romney another. Whether bad or otherwise, Trump realized it and referred to them as RINO's thereby tightening the ranks on his issues. Even if you lean left, you should see the Dems where the ones that always spoke with one voice and forcing the Republicans to do the same. Fair or not, that is my biased opinion.

That's interesting. I always thought it was the Republicans who got on the same page but Democrats who were more scattered.
    Different points of view ....

Almost correct, but once they got over their infighting they then voted in lock step. My biased opinion!

I would certainly agree as to ur biased opinion.
I recall Dems being split in the 70s when LBJ was Prez, again in the 80s when Ted Kennedy ran against an incumbent Dem prez, etc etc. The term "like herding cats" is an apt description of Dems

Even today Manchin has opposed much of Bidens agenda and on the other side AOC/Bernie are always bitching about Bidens agenda.

The one thing the Dems are united in is opposition to maga politics.

I don’t really trust my assessment of the history of this issue, but I can say that I see both parties being dominated by lockstep thought today, which I think is very dangerous. Indeed, it seems “effective”, but it does somewhat defeat the point of getting elected, if you just have to follow the script that anyone would have followed.

worse yet, it defeats the separation of powers when the house and senate refuse to do their job when the executive branch grossly oversteps. Senat republicans abdicated their responsibility and gave the executive branch a blank check to break the law with impunity knowing that the pub party wouldn't ever vote them guilty in an impeachment hearing if it meant they might lose their seat in a primary. The cowardly votes followed by their abandoning of Liz sends a clear message to DeSantis that he will not have to worry about impeachment, regardless of what he does.

Well said. Checks and balances require independent entities. James Madison’s argument for the structure that would sustain the republic is for ambition to be pitted against ambition. As long as there are countless different interests in different parties and regions fighting it out, the nation may be protected from tyranny. The countless number of different interests has been dwindling and dwindling until it appears that we’ve arrived at …two. For all the good ways there might be to solve a problem, doubtless that there are many many more terrible other ways. In a marketplace of essentially two ideas, it’s almost assured we won’t be finding many of the best solutions these days.

You may be right that they bitched, but they always voted in lock step so what is the difference. The pubs did the same thing recently, but it was too late, they didn't have the votes. Would like to Make America Great Again and go back to the Reagan years, but somehow that makes me anti-American, go figure!

There are two sayings that still mean something, and they are:

    1) Follow the money, and

    2) Look at the voting record.

If you can't get elected without money (and their interests) then it is who we are. If we are not prepared to do our own homework on who represents US and not the money then we get what we deserve.

Ans obviously, the second one is a direct result of the first. You don't do what you are told, then you don't get the goodies.

Okay, maybe there is a third truism:

How can you tell an elected official is lying? Their lips are moving.

Hard for me to justify voting for the party of hate and division.

Not at all what the Tweet or the post was about. They don't want to go to a school or live in a state where women's rights are what old white men deign to let them have.

I’m surprised you have internet. Do your children go to school by horse and carriage?
You guys are stuck in the old days. Pretty hilarious and scary too. Y’all gotta pretend we’re in the old days of racism, sexism so your party has an ounce of relevance. Keep on trying.
