Roster Clarity - Classification (big roster turnover looming)

Wrights most valuable skill is catching passes out of the backfield. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be part of this year's offense.

 

The problem with that approach is that if the turn over continues, it will be hard to bring in the top rated recruits.

 

I think going forward schools are going to be a bit more careful with who they take from the portal. New rules say that if you take a 4-4 transfer from the portal, you are on the hook for that player for the remainder of their eligibility. So if they don't pan out, you just can't get rid of them. Then, of course, if a 4-4 transfer chooses to transfer, they have to sit out a year. Wherever Cox goes will likely file a LRS waiver on the basis that he was dismissed...with the hope he can play right away next year (assuming he doesn't declare for the draft). Not knowing exactly what really happened, hard to predict if a LRS waiver would be approved.

It is. AR just not electing to dump it off in a timely manner, but would rather scramble around. That screen pass to Ettienne last week was pretty nice.

 

It’s the lay of the land right now with the transfer portal free agency. Buddy Martin mentioned on Shane’s podcast that Billy chose to work on the inside out and let the current guys buy in and prove that they have what it takes. Unfortunately, as you can see we have a lot of players from the previous regime not contributing. You will definitely see the attrition this off-season.

Not to pat myself on the back (well, maybe just a little), I went on record three or four months ago that we only had a handful of players on an already over-stuffed roster who will have exhausted their eligibility going into next fall. I also pointed out along the way that CBN had made it clear that he would not tolerate anything less than full buy-in to the new culture. That fact was set in stone when he started the culling process of Mullen's last class with a questionnaire crafted to gauge their degree of commitment to the program/new regime. It was further amplified by the dismissal of three players in the very early going.

BN is no fool. He knew full-well that the roster was severely sub-par talent-wise and that the team had gone into the fetal position after the KY game in '21. A full purge of the "dead weight" was an absolute necessity and Napier has gone about that process in a judicious but determined manner. Due to the fact that he needed "bodies" to field a team in '22, he has been forced to stay his hand to some extent - but those days will soon be over. We can expect a mass exodus that could total as many as 25-35 additional "cullees" before the roster is finalized next Fall. And I for one am all for it.

 

Yes, BN has emphasized culture buy-in and wanting character player's. He's not after a Mr. All-World player with a me-me attitude! I will not be surprised by an exodus of those inflexible to change. The last two coaching staffs were lazy as hell and allowed complacency to become contagious. I'm glad we have a coaching staff that has a higher standard!!!

Keeping "bodies" on the roster to field a 2 deep on defense was something I mentioned in another thread a while back. As a new coach, half to manage that locker room carefully. Especially when the season has not gone as expected

 

Not sure that a roster cleansing is the total answer to our team woes.

 

My amateur eyes also rank Wright as the 3rd or 4th best on the roster, but what’s curious is that the dude went from the unfailing starter to completely absent in the span of 1-2 games and is now even behind a dude that was getting 0 carries. That’s some seriously rapid passing up.

 

Not a bad take, but to me there are quite a few players who liked playing for the old coaches and are averse to change. In the Whittemore thread, I postulated that he wasn't what this group wants in a flanker/slot player (WAY different than Pearsall) and that IS a shame. But I say, if you can recognize what they want out of your position and are disciplined, you WILL get to audition your skillset. Then it is up to you to produce to an effective level.

I seriously doubt anyone on the current staff is "holding back" players who can play but still owns some kind of "Dumbo Rosary" in their locker.

 

Methinks Wright's biggest problem is that Napier signed Peirce 2.0 and he isn't Dumbo. And he let others (including Lingard) to take his place. I can sort of get behind the notion that has hasn't been Freshman Wright since he injured his knee, and he may be just that fraction less shifty than before and it has cost him dearly.

 

If you are talking about Gator-level success in Year 2, then I concur.

If this is...again...another veiled attempt to play "Is Napier Smarter Than a First Grader", well then, you and quite a few folks who post on here are going to have a REALLY bad time for a while.

If it is the latter, do you prefer holding your breath and turning blue, or do you prefer to kick a sleeping dog?

 

I tend to agree, but I am not sure we have seen Napier play the way he wishes either. He has been hamstrung by an injured AR and an incomplete team. Until he has his own players we don't know what we have in BN....except that culture and commitment are required.

Too soon for me to make a clear headed judgement, except I like the guy, Right?
