Excellent post. Thank you. I can live with and accept policy differences. I didn't agree with much with what W. Bush did, but I never thought he was a threat to democracy. I just disagreed with his policies. Trump and those on the ballot following his footsteps? Completely different. They are Fascists who believe that the only way they can lose is if they are cheated out of a victory. How can a democracy survive if/when this group gets power? Last time, we were lucky to have a few Rs in place of power to stop Trump and his followers on Jan 6 and afterwards that democracy survived. Next time? We may not be so lucky. I used to vote for R candidates if and when I thought they were the best candidate on the ballot. In fact,I was a registered R for years until 2012. Never once did I ever vote straight ticket, until 2020. Did so again in 2022. I'll continue to do so until the MAGA influence on the R party no longer has a stranglehold on the party.
Trump hasn’t conceded and actively pushed the narrative that Democrats stole the election. He’s still talking with supporters about this and Republicans are actively running on these talking points for the November 8, 2022 elections. They’re inextricably linked and pertinent to today and yet Biden is supposed to ignore it and say can’t we all get along?
If Biden is a real man he can speak to promoting unity and moving forward….together. Instead, we get more of the same. Biden sounds a bit like Trump.
When you cannot run on your record. And when you stand against what people care about. You whine about 2020 which is something no one cares about as a whole. Outside a few here on too hot who can't let their obsession go when it comes to Trump. Keep it up. Democracy is about to show how stupid and pathetic this speech was.
Pubs will likely win the midterm. That’s because (a) it is a normal occurrence for the other party to regain seats during midterms of the first term of a President, and (b) MAGA has unleashed an unprecedented shower of fear-porn that people believe Biden is the fault of everything (despite things such as reality, given that the World has problems outside the sphere of Biden).
They're indicting as fast as they can. These things take time, especially with all the procedural roadblocks the guilty are throwing up. Let bygones be bygones is an admirable sentiment, one, however, which does not apply to organized treason. Some things shouldn't be swept under the rug.
I obviously know that and the not so subtle implication is that how was it possible that a gaffe prone incompetent like Biden could be elected and similarly does anyone have the political equivalent of buyer's remorse. Repeating what I said multiple times, I think Biden is in over his head and that I would have preferred another alternative. That being he was and still his preferential to the only alternative in 2020 and as far as I'm concerned that still holds true and even with Biden's verbal gaffes and errors in judgment even more so than two years ago. Getting back to the primary subject of this thread, while conceding that Biden's speech could be construed as divisive it was a direct response to the Trump and his dominant wing of the Republican party certainly the most divisive political movement in recent history.
Did by any chance you read the original post? If not, the premise is that Biden fails to unify the country BECAUSE he criticized “the former President” continued attack on democracy. The OP brought in Trump. Nobody can have an intelligent discussion about the topic without discussing the complete topic, which is all centered on a Biden’s commentary on Trump. So, how is it that you “blame” people engaging in discourse over the topic of the original post for bringing up the very subject of the post?
That’s all fine. But if I’m leading, let’s say I’m a soccer coach. Should I give a pre game pep talk pointing out how a couple players really screwed up last match? Or should I try to get them focused on the things we did well so everybody’s buying in. According to many libbies here, it’s good to lead with only half the team on board and in mind.
LOL, most diehard libs and progressives wanted GWB locked up as a war criminal. You never hear it now, because they’ve moved on and he’s now used as a pawn to contrast to Trump. Eventually Trump will fade away and the next man/woman who picks up the ball for the GOP will be public enemy number one for the left. It’ll be everything they said about Trump plus a few things more. It’s always been this way. I remember when Reagan was “the greatest threat to our democracy.” It’s the same dog and pony show every time and it keeps going on because people keep falling for it every time.
Strategically stupid speech that doubled down on his September Darth Vader address that began the Red momentum. His final appeal to the American voter is "Trump!". Brilliant, thank you Biden.
If nobody cares about 2020, why are so many MAGAS running for office on the false premise that the 2020 election was fraudulent? If it didn’t matter, why do they make it the centerpiece of their campaigns?
Biden immediately reached across the aisle. He was rejected. That doesn’t mean he’s a good leader because he tried and failed, but it is unfair to say he didn’t make the gesture. It takes two parties welcome to healing. We don’t have that. And that to me means we need someone better to do so. And there’s not a single “big name” out there who looks to be that unifying person. Thus, we will yet again be forced to choose in 2024 between two terrible choices, with the hate and divide repeating itself all over again in what is becoming an aggravating and never ending cycle.
Did you mean to say Biden reached across and into my wallet? Then yeah, he keeps trying that with increased taxes.
He should do one of these a night up until election day just so we all know for certain half the country sucks ass.
I’m curious if you can quote any of the MAGA candidates campaigning in merit. Because every single one I hear is running nothing but attack ads against their opponent and Biden, in general.
No. I said he reach3d across the aisle and sought compromise with the Republicans. They rejected the gesture completely. They want the divide so they can emphasize the divide in 2022 midterms. That’s the politics. (And I bet you know this).
No. It is because the dems are the ones who own keeping kids out of school. The dems are the ones who have caused runaway inflation. The dems are the ones who have been a failure on energy. The dems are the ones who have exacerbated the border problem to levels never seen. The dems are the ones who to this day are pushing to have kids take a shot they do not need. The dems are the ones who coerced to take a shot and fired people who did not take a shot. A shot they did not need. The dems are the ones who have damaged public health to the point our doctors now have no where to turn for good advice. Keep thinking that 2020 and Trump is the problem. This has everything to do with the dems and their record over the last two years.
