It’s tough to do. Hard to leave friends and family behind, hard to learn a new culture and so on but after my parents pass it’s something I’m seriously considering. Having said that my preference would be to go to Hawaii which will always be reliably blue and just flat out gorgeous playground for people who are active outdoors. Second would be Mediterranean Spain for similar reasons. It’s also first world with affordable housing and great medical care. Spanish is also easy to learn. Place like Thailand is too much of a culture shock and I would not consider Central America or the Caribbean

 

I'll play, though I don't think its as partisan as you suggest.
My parents did this back when Clinton ran for re-election. They said they'd move to Mexico if Clinton won again because "they didn't want to live in a country stupid enough to vote for Clinton after all he's done."
He won.
They immediately sold their amazing home on the water (Indian Bayou) in Destin and . . . moved to a sedate neighborhood in Fort Walton Beach.
They somehow survived, though Mom's back window of her car has been covered with rightwing/conspiracy bumper stickers ever since.

I wish they had moved to Mexico - would have been a much better place to visit.

If the cons take over congress, I'm staying put.
Ask me again if Trump is re-elected. Then I may have a better understanding of what my parents felt back in the day.

 

Perhaps a more interesting thread would be " If you had to leave the US, which countries would be on your list? "

I've heard there are a lot of ex-pat Americans in Costa Rica (cheap cost of living plus the tropical thing). Some of the places I'd consider IF I were considering a relocation:
Canada, New Zealand, Portugal off the top of my head. That said, no panic moving if there is a maga wave next week.

 

I think most of the time this is like people saying they're going to leave Facebook; it's venting or looking for attention. Of course, leaving Facebook (and returning because they almost always do) is a lot easier than packing up and leaving your native country.

 

When Bubba won, I swore I was going to do the Johnny Cash man in black thing. I had no way of knowing that things would be better after the 1994 midterms for the rest of Clinton's time in office than they've ever been since. That's the only hope I have left, that there can be a repeat of that now. But the difference now is the divisiveness. Bubba was willing to compromise. I don't see that happening now.

 

Those all sound cool. For the sake of this hypothetical, I will put aside how far I'd be from relatives and financial considerations.

I would want a cooler climate - than Florida at least. Good food and wine. Something culturally different for me but English or Spanish speaking (I don't think I'm smart enough to learn an Asian language, for example, so that whole continent is probably out practically). Australia has too many insects and lethal animals for me, lol, so there goes another one. Given where I've actually been, I think Argentina, Spain, and Canada would be on the top of my list. I'd also want to check out some areas of Ecuador and Colombia that have climates I might enjoy. I've heard good things about those places.

On the economic/fiscal side, many argue that they're both corporatist parties which support lots of spending and argue over small differences in tax rates while being paid off by their respective donors. I can see that perspective if that's what you're saying. On issues like same sex marriage, abortion, the War on Drugs, the role of religion and government, etc., I think it's a much tougher case to make that there aren't real differences.

Not going to leave the country, but if the election denying Fascists sweep Arizona, we've discussed leaving the state. Have family in California and lived in Seattle before. My job is fully remote. My wife will just need to find something.

 

I have said for years that I consider ALL national politicians as scum. I have said for years that it is truly a two party system … Political elites and the rest of us.
No way on God’s green earth will one elected official make me pick up and move and leave my family, friends, land, and community behind.
I can out wait whoever gets elected.
