Employers in NYC and California will soon have to post salary ranges on job postings

    Colorado again leading the charge. They’ve had this law in the books since the start of 2021.

    What would prevent an employer
    What would prevent an employer from just putting a wide range and use the caveat pay dependent on skills and experience?

    Seems like it would just be guess work and of little value to prospective employees

    I don't get it. Were people showing up their first day on the job clueless as to pay?

    They either accepted the pay/benefit structure or they didn't.

    For some smaller companies or non profits you try and sell folks on the work and the impact it has. Posting a salary up front seems it will hurt that ability to sell a company over a pay rate.

    I tell everyone ithe pay scales in writing before an interview, but I certainly think there is a strategic advantage for some to being able to at least meet with and sell a prospect on your organization first.

    Asking people to waste their time interviewing for a job before a company will tell them the pay rate is crappy.

    Transparency is a good thing. The people who are interested in the job will pursue it. The people who aren't won't. People shouldn't have to waste time with an interview for a job they won't want when they find out the pay.

    I post the crappy pay rate because I don't want to waste my time screening applicants that aren't interested.

    Pretty common place in pro sports to do this, has quite a bit of meaning there, seeing what others are compensated

    Every hiring manager discloses a salary range during the interview process. This seems like a big win for…..wait for it, the bureaucrats.

    This is meaningless legislation that has one and only one purpose: For the media to dutifully fulfill self selected mission to parade this bullshit to the masses as some kind of “accomplishment”.

    No one has to "waste time" .
    They can ask for the pay/benefit structure before an interview. No one comes to an interview at gun point. Geez.

    If the manager wont give you that info, simply decline the offer to interview. No real time is wasted.

    Nowadays, most people use job boards to apply and those take like 60 minutes to submit your already completed application and resume.

    No on is asking them to interview if they dont want. Just saying that it doesn't have to be posted as long as the communication is honest.

    Talk about government overreach.

    How so? They have the right to ask the benefits before agreeing to an interview.

    Why is the government forcing its posting needed?

    Pay is just one part of a career.

    That's still wasted time writing the emails or calling and trying to extract info that they should freely given.
    Oh lord, you don't get to say this as a DeSantis supporter when we're talking about something as minimal as pay transparency.

    Like clockwork, those on the Right are against even minimal measures that benefit the worker.

    Many companies already post the salary range in an effort to attract and screen applicants.

    Well, first of all, now people wont have to waste weeks going through the "interview process" to find out they aren't offering a competitive salary in the final stages. In almost every situation more information is better for the customer, consumer or jobseeker.

    A few points, but there are HR people out there who advise you to not ask about salary in your initial interview becomes it comes off self serving. So job hunters sometimes have to get further in the process before finding out, which is inefficient for everyone.
    But this will also make for a more efficient and equitable market place. Employers will be able to more easily see if they are over or under paying specific roles. And employees already with the company can see if they are being underpaid relative to current market conditions. Gives them a bit more bargaining power.

    I know a number of people who would be quite happy about this "meaningless legislation." They weren't happy being jerked around by companies who interviewed them and obscured the pay until the late stages of the process.
