Lets not get too worked up about the 3-4 defense, I know how it sounds but they very rarely, if ever, have only 3 DL out there. Just like Bama and maybe Georgia, they have the 4 usual DLinemen out there most of the time or more in jumbo formations. I have no idea why they like to call it 3-4, I guess just to say it's flexible because sometimes those DEs are so good that they can drop to coverage or spy, which is part of the simulated pressure, but they still have 2 DTs just about every time and 2 DEs that are sometimes bigger or more agile. The 3-4 name is deceiving, we all play the usual 4 DL.

Lot of talk by DL. Remember when TJ spoke of breaking Alex Browns sack record. No one close. Lot of talkers that can’t sack QBs and celebrate too much when do. These guys also take wide angles and get pushed beyond play or lose gap control. Our DL is not as physical now.

The game is different now from when brown played. Polite put up good sack numbers but that's all he was good for and we suffered the same lack of containment at times because of it. Today's game stresses the edges more than Coryell style offenses of old...

The ONLY thing Grantham seemed to be good at was bringing the pressure on QB's when he had talented edge rushers and blitz packages.

Remember the Miami game with 10 sacks?

Once we lost those stud edge rushers Granthams defense went straight into the .... s____r.

My niece's dorm is insane, nicer than any of my friends' apartments back in the day. And she's not a scholar athlete. Can only imagine what the athletes' dorms are like.

We don’t have the personnel to run 4-3 right now. Not sure what we can run tbh…odd dime?

We really don't have the ideal personnel for anything, but it seems we mostly play only 2 LBs, so basically a 4-2-5 with the star. Sometimes we have an extra edge as LB but mostly use an extra db as Star with an extra S or extra CB, where sometimes the star or S come down in run support.

We really need LBs. It doesn't matter if they're Edge type guys as long as they know how to play LB and are quick/fast enough to cover and run sideline to sideline. We have a bunch of Edge now that can't really play LB, but maybe some of the ones we're bringing in are in that "micah parsons" mold, which of course is an exaggeration but you get the idea.

You do know that when I say 3-4 base defense that is usually a 3-3-5 defense and when I say 4-3 base defense I mean the most popular version in the 4-2-5 defense. But yes, I prefer four true defensive lineman over the 3 true defensive lineman.

We also need to simplify the scheme... and we need to get lined up properly. That holds true for whichever scheme our coaches are teaching our Football team.

I just hope we get all that ironed out before the UGA game.

I think the 4-3 base give us a better chance at getting to the QB without having to blitz an LB...

But you are right about our personnel. And truthfully, right now I just want our players to learn the scheme that they are currently in. We need to get lined up properly, especially on third downs. And we need to learn our assignments... too many blown coverages. And that one blown coverage play in the Tennessee game was the difference in winning or losing.

We have two weeks before we face UGA, and the good news is that the Gators are working though the bye week. The defense needs it.

    Go Gators!

Yeah, no way I could decipher what you meant wrt 3-4 vs 3-3-5 you also lost me earlier when you were advocating for an even front defense and calling for all DTs and dismissed away a poster for pointing the fallacy.

I’m not sure of the extent of your knowledge because you speak in generalities and appear to lack specific knowledge of the intricacies of each alignment.

Ftr the personnel of a 4-3 is vastly different than a 3–3-5 along with the philosophy behind each configuration. The 4-3 is a read and react concept with 4 secondary players where defensive personnel match or exceed the size of the offense developed to counter option/veer offenses allowing for an extra unaccounted for inverted safety and maintain a cover 3 shell for basic offensive sets. It has evolved to counter spread offenses and different physical attributes of the position players. The 3-3-5 is an attacking defense usually undersized personnel with 6-8 men in the box pre-snap covering every gap and confusing the offense wrt their calls. I think you are attempting to differentiate nickel and or dime coverages these aren’t really base defenses but could be employed week to week with different % of utilization.

So language is important to communicate thoughts succinctly and and accurately.

Once again, I don’t know the depth of your background. The following is a primer for those others on the board who are interested in the mechanics of defense.

Defenses are constructed around the strengths/weaknesses of the available personnel. All defenses are flexible wtr to modest adjustments without having to abandon the initial philosophy.

The initial alignment is called your base and should provide rules for every player to lineup and execute their gap assignment regardless of offensive formation. (The defense might not have the ideal personnel if the offense subs a personnel grouping by alignment should be gap responsibility sound)

Defenses aren’t mirror images there is a strong and weak side with specific attributes for each position even if they are both DT, LBs, DE, etc. Their alignment is dependent on the strength of the offensive line, backs or field position relative to Lt, Rt, middle of the field. The strength for the defensive front (DL,LB) isn’t always consistent with the secondary.

Secondary has decisions to make also wrt to formations (usually based on receiver numbers and or hash mark location). these also can be in conflict offense can have line strength to wide side of field and receiver secondary strength to the boundary (short side of the field) regardless once strength has been determined by MLB and FS proper alignment and responsibilities should be sound. Everything from this point on becomes technique and that’s a much more complicated discussion.

I know probably too wordy, TMI

If you don't know what a 3-4 BASE DEFENSE IS than I am wasting my time explaining anything to you...

Your rant above proves that you don't know what you are talking about.

I posted links to my explanation (with links/examples) and you gave me your opinion... You are simply in error about the fact that the BASE DEFENSE only defines the first set of players ON THE LINE and how many are in it.

In a 3-4 there are 3 defensive lineman ON THE LINE, at minimum. in a 4-3 there are 4 defensive lineman on that line, at minimum. the second and third layer line up are part of that scheme... That's why the 3-4 BASE DEFENSE can and is often an 3-3-5 set piece. And a 4-3 BASE DEFENSE is often an 4-2-5 set piece... But, yes, we need different personal to run it.

I even linked proof of what I am saying to back my point up... You gave us your opinion.

But... you are right about the personnel, and we are correcting that in the recruiting class. We have a plethora of big bad D-lineman and tones of DBs/Safeties to fix any type of scheme we want to run in the future.

Another great GC thread that in 4 pages may have 20 posts that are actually about 2 of the most important Gator recruits left on our board.

BTW, if anyone cares, the Gators have a REAL shot at Qua (some insiders believe we're leading) and he could actually bring Smith with him.

If we have toe RIGHT players any defensive scheme would world. But the 3-3-5 is best to stop the pro spread. I wonder how many college teams run that? I am asking, not proclaiming in sarcasm.

What you fail to acknowledge/comprehend is the numbers correlate to body types and not simply X’s aligned on the chalkboard or filed presnap. I also gave you the history of the defensive alignments you quoted, not to mention your nonsensical earlier statement that I should have the intuition to understand a 4-3 is the equivalent of a 3-3-5 wrt to alignment and personnel.

Your assumptions of my acumen and experience are way off something I steered clear of in my previous post wrt to you and yours.

You and your google experience is no match for me. You have proven yourself to be a neophyte wrt to defensive football concepts and implementing them. I will bow out of the this thread since I have more to further the discussion.

    Have a great day

All this started when we talked bout how our defense used to be good... and then Grantham took us to a 3-4 base defense... since then we have sucked on defense. We used to run a 4-3 base demesne and we were often one of the best defenses in the nation...

Some of that is the personnel and some of that is the lack of top talent. I know that. But we have to agree that no matter which defense we run we simply have to get our DBs and Safeties aligned properly and we have to make sure they know their assignments.

Right now all I want is less mistakes and blown coverages on the defense... that would make me happy.

im with you on running a traditional 4 down linemen alignment but im sure we have all accepted they are going to stick with what they will want to do defensively in the future with the players we have this year personnel be damned
